Is it just me or are the media and law enforcement being much more cautious about calling this an act of terror than is normal? The witness accounts seem to make it clear that the person was accelerating when they hit those outside the mosque. That at least indicates it was very likely not an accident. Why the reticence in this case but not some of the other recent attacks?
There’s always a (far-fetched) chance of a stuck throttle or medical problem.

From what I’ve heard and read, there are late evening prayers currently being held every night for Ramadan at mosques, and there were a lot of Muslims in the area at the time, which was after midnight local time. One eyewitness report I heard was that someone had collapsed, perhaps because of the heat, and there was a crowd of Muslims around giving assistance. A van then mounted the pavement and drove into this crowd. It’s reported that there were around ten people injured. The van came to a stop, probably because it crashed into something. The driver was then apprehended - this is apparently footage of him being arrested. I’ve also read unconfirmed reports that two other people in the van ran away and escaped capture.
Watching bbc news and they said reports are that counter terrorist forces are joining the regular police.
I would imagine that counter-terrorism police would be called in as a matter of course if there was any suspicion of a terrorist incident.
I haven’t seen any further discussion about other people being in the van, so the reports of there being a couple of people in addition to the driver may not be accurate. It would be a bit strange, anyway, to have two passengers for a vehicular attack who then immediately run away, if it was pre-planned at least.
Some have described this as a deliberate act, and the circumstances would suggest it to be so, but I’m not sure that this is conclusive yet, at least from the little information I have seen at this early stage.

I’ve been musing for a long time (like, a number of years) on how good a weapon of indiscriminate destruction a car would be, and being very thankful that murderous bastards hadn’t yet figured it out.
Looks like that’s all changed now.
