It’s now being reported that Hasan was going to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said he was upset about his impending deployment, which argues against the terrorist angle somewhat. He previously worked at Walter Reed This New York Times story casts a little doubt on the idea that there were multiple shooters. Hasan used two guns and shot mostly other soldiers at a facility where they do paperwork prior to deploying.

Sounds like the guy was a commissioned psychiatrist. Strange.

It’s also strange that a guy with a couple of handguns was able to do this much damage on a military base.

Yes, most soldiers are unarmed while on base unless they’re actively training. The only people who regularly carry guns are the MP’s.

The shooter’s name is now being reported as Nidal Malik Hasan, not Malik Nadal Hasan. (I didn’t think he looked like a tennis player.) It’s starting to sound like he was the only shooter and perhaps two other soldiers assisted him in some undefined way. But it’s not like they’ve had time to reconstruct the scene or anything.

msnbc is reporting that major hasan was born in virginia, went to virginia tech, and is possibly of jordanian descent.

unfortunatly one of the wounded has passed, there are now 13 dead.

According to his personel record, he was an NRP.

Someone claiming to be his cousin was on Shepherd Smith a little while ago saying that he’d had a hard time dealing with a lot of the stories he was hearing from returning soldiers. He specialized in PTSD issues.

Shep Smith was saying that he’d been harrassed a lot, but I wasn’t clear on the extent or the context. The military has ben overrun with a lot of aggressive evangelicals lately, so I could see that happening.

I’m also not clear on whether he even was a Muslim, since his record listed him as NRP.

It’s terrorism, plain and simple. Doesn’t matter which euphemism the media uses, or whether the nutjobs use a handgun or a car bomb – it’s terrorism.
Hardly irrelevant, IMHO. If it can be established that the shooter(s) motive was religious, that would definitely raise the question of whether or not it’s appropriate to enlist Muslims into the armed forces during what’s basically a Holy War against Islam.

As a former recruiter, and current active duty soldier now, you cannot deny enlistment to an applicant due to their religious background.

Remember also, McVey wasn’t a muslim and he managed to blow up a building,…with children in it.

I’m hearing he was transferred from Walter Reed to Fort Hood, and that he received a “poor performance” evaluation at Walter Reed.

Why would the Army send someone with a “poor performance” evaluation into a war zone? Is that common?
