Mundane: can you buy the glass decanters from drip-coffee makers separately?

I recently broke the glass decanter (or whatever you want to call it – the thing that the hot coffee goes in) from a drip coffee maker. Not wanting to go without coffee for long, I’ve been trying to find a replacement, which hasn’t proven easy.

Thus, my incredibly boring question: has anyone ever seen these in retail stores? I know you can order them from the manufacturer of the coffee maker, but they generally take a while to ship it, and they tend to be pricey. If its something I’d be likely to find in a Macy’s or Sears or company, I’ll take a trip down to the mall today and have a look-see.

Yes- I was looking for one when I accidentally dropped one. Target carried several brands/sizes.

Note, however- a replacement carafe was $12, new (no-name) coffee makers started at $14. So I bought a new one.

I googled [coffeemaker decanter replacement] and got 700+ hits. If you added your name and model# (from the plate on the ack/bottom) I bet you’d find it in seconds. One 800 call later and you’ll have it in a couple days.

One source that had quite a variety of them seemed to charge $15-$25 depending on fanciness.

You’ll probably not have succes witha generic one because coffee decanters have a lot of size-specific features. The wrong one won’t sit properly on the heater, or won’t hold the drip valve open or …

A couple of trips to the mall to bring back generic units that don’t quite fit will make ordering the right one (or getting a whole new coffee maker) much the easier choice.

I recently broke an old decanter from a Mr. Coffee model that was discontinued quite a whie ago. (It was my girlfriend’s grandfather’s, co it had sentimental value.) I couldn’t find it in any stores or anywhere on the internet, but I was able to get it by calling Mr. Coffee’s 800 number. Joe DiMaggio did not answer though.

Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, or DAV thrift stores usually have a good selection coffee decanters. If you’re not averse to saving a little money, they beat the heck out of the prices at Target.

I’ve seen all kinds at K-mart and other similar stores. I don’t see the problem in getting a replacement. They come in all different sizes, some with specific brand names and some generic (and purpotedly universal). You can even get an aluminum one, but it holds only four cups. But as previously mentioned, the cheapest is around $12, so you may just want to buy a new unit.

I strongly ditto the thrift store strategy. If you need a part for any commonly made appliance, that’s where to get it and for very little money. In fact, you might be forced to buy the coffee maker and carafe for a whopping $5, notice the coffee maker is in better condition than the one you already own and “upgrade” that while you’re at it!

I work for one of them so I know it’s true. However, bring in the old top because the only way to match it right is to find one with the right top. Its the middle indention of the top that’s important to match, when you look at your’s youll see what Im talking about. Then match the carafe size too.

Yes, thrift stores are the way to go. I broke several carafes before I got one made by Krups. It has lasted quite a long time.
