A notion occured to me a while back and I’ve been kicking it around now for quite some time on my own and upon seeing this forum, I thought that bringing it up here would be a good idea. Well, okay it’s more of a question than a notion, but let’s not nit pick.
The question is this, which bands/artists from this generation, (I’m 22 so the frame of reference is about the last decade) will continue to maintain popularity and relevance in the years to come ? I have grown up listening to Bands such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Dave Matthew’s Band, Counting Crows, and other such 90’s type bands, however I also derrive great pleasure from listening to bands that are now20-30 years old, based upon when they first appeared and experienced their hey day such as CCR, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin. Any how, you get the idea. I was just curious as to what others think about the “Shelf Life” of current artists and who they think will last a couple of decades. In other words, as we are now listening to music our parents thought was really groovy, what bands or artists do you think our kids will still listen to.
I guess it depends on whether you mean artists who will still be making popular music in 10 or 20 years (like Ozzy, Aerosmith or Metallica have done), or artists who will have ceased making music (or at least mainstream music) but will still be gathering large groups of new fans who are attracted to their older stuff (like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd)…
Nirvana will probably have staying power. It seems that artists who die a tragic death, or commit suicide, become legends of sorts, regardless of whether they are actually good.
Nirvana and Pearl Jam have both been credited for ushering in the grunge era, Nirvana more often than Pearl Jam, so I think they both have the potential. Other than that, I’m not really the best expert to ask. I went through a country phase during the early to mid 90s, (YUCK) so I was out of the rock scene for a while. It’s too early to tell with the newer artists who will have staying power. So my mix consists mostly of newer rock (Staind, Godsmack, Three Doors Down, etc) and 80s metal (Tesla, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, etc)
I think I just partially hijacked a thread…Apologies.
I really hope Radiohead doesn’t blow it. Their last two albums were good, but didn’t measure up to the previous couple. I think out of most current music that I listen to, they’re the most likely to stick around.
