Nym. You are exactly right.
I can not get enough of the very same bands that you mentioned in the OP. Well, except for Siouxie and Oingo Boingo. Oh yeah, and Talking Heads was playing at the time. Not necessarily all that romantic, and I don’t listen to them on purpose.
The music I heard while losing my virginity was the sound of my friend’s mother comming into his bedroom which myself and a classmate had appropriated one New Year’s Eve.
The second instance (the following weekend) likely involved the entire Physical Graffetti soundtrack from a '73 Riviera’s 8 track but album confirmation is lost to time. Yes, Zep is still my favorite band.
The first instance where I vividly remember the song occurred when, as I was entering a bar a girl a year older comming out grabbed me, drug me to her house and screwed me like a galvanized phillips to the sounds of The Bomber by the James Gang. Even though I caught the very last of the song climbing out her window when she suddenly exclaimed “oh shit, my boyfriend’s home” I still have very fond memories of that tune and will forever appreciate her turning me on to it.
Cheating sucks. Classic rock will live forever.
I fall outside the theory. My two favorite 8-tracks(!) at the time of my entry to manhood were The Cars first and Heaven Tonight by Cheap Trick. While I still like a couple of songs off of those releases, I don’t currently own either album, and have no plans to.
As for the “awakening sexuality” theory - absolutely! I remember when I was 15 and in love with a certain boy. I made him a mix tape with all these great 60’s songs (I was an odd one - it was 1996) like “Crimson and Clover,” “I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You,” “Let It Be Me,” “Just My Imagination,” “Love Me Tender,” “Natural Woman,” “Cry To Me,” “Stay (Just A Little Bit Longer,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” and all sorts of Motown - lots of Smokey and Etta James, too. I no longer have the tape, but I still get all warm and fuzzy when I hear those songs. We had a lot of fun feeling each other up and not having sex to those songs.
Let’s see… when I lost my virginity, “I’m That Type of Guy” was playing in the background on MTV. The two hit songs that summer which I still love are “I Drove All Night” by Cyndi Lauper and “Secret Rendezvous” by Karyn White.
That was a hellish summer, but the music and having my first time made it bareable.
I’ll contribute to that theory.
I wasn’t listening to music per se.
But the soundtrack to the Honeymooners brings it all back to me.
That Ralph Kramden had it right when he predicted to the moon.
((This was in the summer of 1992))
yup.
music that reminds me of being 15 again.
which was only 4 years ago…
“little pink stars” by Radish, especially.
or “nancy boy” by Placebo.
The number one song on the Billboard charts when I lost my virginity was “Rapture,” by Blondie.
A good sampling, thus far and VERY interesting music memories.
For those that might post in the future, I’d like to reiterate I don’t mean the specific song that was playing during the deed, but the general era/genre.
And I can’t believe I forgot about Talking Heads. Sheesh, good thing Ginger is here to remind me.
