Music from the era of your lost virginity

I have long held the impression that the music you were listening to during the time you lost your virginity will always be your favourite. Not the exact song during the exact moment, but just that time in your life. I’m not sure where this theory has come from, but it’s met with assention for the most part.

For example, my favourite music is still (use pre-1990 for those bands still plugging away) The Police, The Cure, REM, U2, Oingo Boingo, Siouxie and the Banshees and the like. I listen to all forms of music. Grew up with Motown and pre-1970’s country, could not live without jazz, might even take a bullet for Steely Dan.

But.

For sheer pull-me-out-of-my-doldrums listening pleasure, I’m going to grab Document or Staring At the Sea or dance madly to Synchronicity II. Every time.

Does this hold water with the Teeming Millions?

I still have a soft spot for most of the music I listened to then. My tastes have expanded, but I still basically listen to hard rock / metal.
And just cause you made me think of it, the song “Do Me” by, I think, Bell Biv DeVoe(?) was playing on MTV when I lost my virginity.

Nope, I lost my virginity to the music of Enya (a favorite of the 36 year old schoolteacher I lost it to). I don’t particularly care for Enya.

Yes, I think it’s true. Sadly enough I was into the big 80’s hair bands when I lost my MamaCherry. I still love 80’s hair bands. Something about them makes me giggly and happy. That whole year was like a big concert to me and though I still love other music, 80’s hair bands can get me rocking and happy any time. Depression can be lifted for me by playing Hysteria or Appetite For Destruction. Odd but true. I am so ashamed.

Not sure I fully agree with you love. Most of my 80s faves predate my misplacement of my innocence.

I listen to nearly anything and everything usually, but 80s music generally makes me very happy.

Don’t Leave Me This Way reminds me of my first kiss.

Some TMBG and Moxxy Fruvous and a certain handful of songs bring to mind intense memories of my current relationship with the girl I love (Chicago girl - do you know her?).
But the virginity thing? Not really. There’re two songs that remind me of the girl (still my best friend to this day) but they don’t invoke the memory of the act.

God, I’m struggling to even remember the music of that year…

Oh I was supposed to list a few too huh? Queen (big time), Moody Blues, The Police, REM, Hunters and Collectors, LRB (Oz bands)…

I’ll think of a dozen more as soon as I post of course…

Nah, nothing I mentioned invokes memories of the act. Hell, hardly anything invokes memories of the act, full stop. [sub]Thank all the gods that ever were.[/sub] My music doesn’t really inspire warm fuzzies or sweet memories or anything of that sort. It just seems to continue to be my favourite genre of music.
Were I to change the OP from “losing your virginity” to “awakening of your sexuality” do you think that might swing things a bit? Just a thought.

Ye gods…if you changed it to “awakening of your sexuality” we’d have to go back to 1980 and I don’t think my heart could stand the strain of not laughing.

If you wanna talk about “first kiss” type stuff…there was no music playing the first time ANY boy ever kissed me, because we were at a Denny’s and drunk on champagne.

There was music playing the first time I was french-kissed, and it was by a gross BBS boy and “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper was on MTV at the time. I am still not overly-fond of that song.

When I lost my virginity the album my boyfriend and I were listening to all the time was “Faith” by George Michael. When I put it in that context I have to giggle my ass off, because he’d croon “Father Figure” to me at times…and I was 17 and he was 14. Heh heh heh.

The music I associate with sex most often is…well, my friends and I, back when we were still pure in body, if not in spirit…we speculated that if you wanted humpin’ music that would really be inspiring you coulnd’t go wrong with the soundtrack to “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” G’wan, hum it to yourself, and you’ll see what I mean.

I wouldn’t particularly recommend the Imperial March from “Star Wars,” though.

Smells Like Teen Spirit and its ilk. Although my tastes now gravitate more towards older rock I do have a soft spot for the “indie” genre in its heyday. On the other hand, that was also the end of high school and beginning of college which were a lot of fun for me for reasons other than merely the gettin’ it on.

Well, I still like TMBG, but not nearly as much as a lot of other groups I’ve discovered since then.

And Billy Joel (she put on one of my tapes as afterglow music)? Forget it.

You fuckers. I had suppressed that memory until I read this thread.

I’m mortally embarrassed and I’m going to go hide.

This probably figures for me. I really do enjoy circa-1985 80’s music, which would put me on schedule. And my then-girlfriend and I enjoyed Shriekback as our mood music, which still gives me a funny feeling in my tummy when I listen to it. Yeah, I’ll sign on for this theory.

I’ll buy that theory as well. I still like that cheezy late 80’s hairspray rock even though my first …uuhhh… awakening was 3 months ago at my wedding.
bwahahahahahahah.
(wipes tear)

Seriously now, the GF back in the day liked George Michael as mood music. I didn’t care for it all that much, but I was 17 and gettin’ some so she could have put on a loop of cats hacking up hairballs and it would’ve been fine with me.

Also, as Cliffy said, the early 90’s alt rock also has a soft spot. My early college years. Ah, to be the one throwing the 8 keg party. It’s like being a celebrity!

Again, not because it was actually playing whilst I misplaced my virginity, and thankfully not because it was going to become prophetic or anything, but… “Here’s Where The Story Ends” by The Sundays. It’s just the song that will always remind me of that particular summer.

Actually, my music of choice comes from the mid to late 90s and i am planning on waiting for marriage. But who knows? Maybe my taste in music will change.

Hmmm … what music was playing in the era of last Friday night / Saturday morning at about 2 A.M.?

Well then yes, most definitely. The eighties music still rocks and always makes me happier.

Hmmmm I wonder if THIS is why Joth doesn’t like eighties stuff…

When I used to mess around with my high school sweetheart at her house, she’d often play one of two 8-Track tapes (!):
Venus and Mars by Wings and
Still Crazy After All These Years by Paul Simon
…these two albums still bring back the most incredible memories…

Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales was playing during the big event.

I listened to that album over and over that year.
