My son is having a birthday party in a couple of weeks time, and the theme is space.
I want to make a music compilation for the party but can only think of a few that really fit.
Star Wars theme
Star Trek theme
2001 A Space Odyssey
The Planets Suite
Space Oddity
Starman
Planet Earth (Duran Duran)
I Lost my Heart to a Starship Trooper
Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft
This kind of thing didn’t end in the seventies/early eighties, but apparently my pathetic excuse for a musical memory bank does. I need a few more suggestions because I would ideally like to omit the last two items.
Anyone?
I don’t know if this will work for you, but here’s a music video of Brian May’s “Star Fleet”
If it’s just backround music, a lot of Moody Blues songs have that space-y feel to it.
There’s a couple of space themed David Bowie songs as well.
You could probably keep going on “moon” titles without even slowing down until you got to 50 or more. Whether that’s “space” or not is the issue. Same with “star” and “sun” but I’m having trouble thinking of many with planet-specific names or “comet” or “meteor” or even “milky way.”
Fun challenge, though.
Knock yerself out.
If you’re looking for specific recommendations, Hawkwind is the definitive spacerock band, and Space Ritual is the definitive spacerock album.
Oh, wait–how old is your son? Hawkwind may or may not be appropriate with some of their material–there’s some mention of sex & drugs, and a bunch of their stuff has kind of an early-heavy-metal sound.
I adore Pressurehed, and Explaining the Unexplained is brilliant. It’s a concept album about UFOs and Sasquatch and Mokele-Mbembe and shit like that.
The album Naz Bar by the Anubian Lights is middle-eastern electronic space lounge.
I’ll take a look through the collection and see what else I can find. Hawkwind is your go-to band, though.
If you need background stuff that you don’t have to dance to, and that doesn’t need words, Holst’s The Planets is truly awesome stuff.
I should note that Hawkwind have about a zillion releases of varying quality, so tread carefully. In addition to the aforementioned Space Ritual, you might also want to try Alien 4 or Love in Space (the live album from the Alien 4 tour). And potentially This is Hawkwind, Do Not Panic.
There are also a couple of Hawkwind Friends and Relations albums that would be filed with Hawkwind. They’re okay.
Nik Turner was in Hawkwind, and has toured and released albums apart from the main band. You can check out Space Ritual (same name as the Hawkwind album, but this is a different release) or Past or Future?
Helios Creed is acid electronic sci-fi paranoia. Not for the faint of heart.
Spiral Realms is spacey ambient electronica. Ditto for The Brain. Ditto for Zero Gravity.
Farflung, especially So Many Minds, So Little Time and 20,000 Feet Per Second.
Some stuff by Acid Mothers Temple (& related artists) would be appropriate, but don’t go there if you’re not already familiar with them–there’s too much to choose from. Ditto for the Damo Suzuki Network.
Walking In Space from the musical Hair
Fly Me To The Moon (Sinatra or Bublé)
Voyage Around the Moon by The Saturn 5 (from the movie That Thing You Do)
Walking On The Moon by The Police
Telestar - it’s a Surf era tune - early 60’s - not sure of the artist
Telstar is by The Tornadoes, 1962. That’s the song I opened this thread to mention.
I also found the Ventures did a cover - or perhaps the Tornadoes covered the Ventures
Definitely Isao Tomita’s Snowflakes are dancing - it’s a moog record of all Claude Debussy. “Arabesque” is used as the theme music of that weirdo astronomy show that comeson PBS sometimes. The whole thing sounds like outer space music in the best way.
I found this site when I was trying to check a few titles/artists. Just scroll down for all the space-related music titles you could ever want.
All I could think of
Final Countdown - Europe
Spaceman - Babylon Zoo
and the theme tunes to series such as Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Lost in Space etc
A lot of Tomita’s stuff would work, such as his “Ravel Album”, “Kosmos”, and Stravinsky’s “Firebird”. He also did a version of “The Planets”, which includes a countdown and launch added to “Mars”.
This CD has a lot of music used in space-themed films:
Within the Realm of a Dying Sun – Dead Can Dance
We’ll Make Great Pets – Porno for Pyros
Much of Jean Michel Jarre’s catalog works as well. (Especially, Rendevous, which is dedicated to the crew of the Challenger.)
Clouds Across the Moon, by the Rah Band
YouTube link
I would add to your list:
The Battlestar Galactica theme (original series)
Theme from The Last Starfighter
Major Tom (Coming Home) by Peter Schilling
Children of the Sun by somebody I can’t remember.
A saucer full Of Secrets - Pink Floyd
Don’t stop me now - Queen (I’m a rocket ship on my way to Mars etc)
Astronomy Domine - Pink Floyd
2,000 Light Years from Home - Rolling Stones
Rocket Man - Elton John
Space Is the Place - Sun Ra
