Songs About SPAAAACE!

The situation is this. I am working in an observatory this summer, and will be putting in some very late nights observing. Clearly, I am going to need music. And what better music for this situation but songs that mention outer space, the planets, aliens, and things of that sort.

So I ask you all to recommend to me your favorite songs that have astronomical or science-fictional subject matter.

Some songs I have already that fit the bill:

Mars by Gustav Holst

Space Oddity (and others) by David Bowie

Supermassive Black Hole by Muse

Who’s There by Smash Mouth

Stars by Switchfoot

Back From Mars by Aqua

Anything goes, but the song has to mention something space-related

YouTube links greatly appreciated!

Rocket Man - Elton John
Major Tom - David Bowie
Rapture - Blondie

Walking on the Moon – The Police

Randy described eternity - Built to spill

Astronaut Jones.

Star Fleet by Brian May
Space Station #5, Spaceage Sacrifice by Montrose
*Honeymoon on Mars *by Be Bop Deluxe
Aldebaran by FM

The O.P. mentioned Space Oddity. Major Tom was a retelling by Peter Schilling.

Also, Bowie’s whole album Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Interplanet Janet from Schoolhouse Rock

Solar System by the Beach Boys
(Warning: Cheesy. Contains the immortal lines “If Mars had life on it / I might find my wife on it.”)

Witnesses’ Waltz” and “Hope Eyrie” by Leslie Fish

*** Ponder

“Standing On The Moon” by the Grateful Dead…

Cygnus X-1 by Rush. I cut my teeth playing Rush and still like listening to them here and there, but this one’s straight outta Spinal Tap.

Anything off of Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks by Brian Eno - The ultimate space album.

From The Planets, my favorite spacey movement is** Venus the Bringer of Peace**

Why Does The Sun Shine? By They Might Be Giants

They Might Be Giants’ Why Does The Sun Shine? (ETA: Doh! Beaten to it!), and their instrumental Space Suit

Rocket Packs by Daniel Amos

perhaps Urban Spaceman by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band

Rush - Countdown, Red Lenses, Vapor Trail, The Stars Look Down, Earthshine
Incubus - Stellar
Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
Blue Oyster Cult - Astronomy
Pixies - Planet of Sound, Space (I Believe In)
Hum - Stars

“Venus and Mars” by McCartney and Wings.

All of the Hope album by Klaatu. Actually, Klaatu did some space-themed stuff on their 3:47 EST album too: “Anus of Uranus,” and “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft,” though the latter was covered, perhaps better, by the Carpenters.

What, and forget their “Phasers on Stun”?

We’re veering into science-fiction here, but I hope that’s OK with the OP.

Encounting - Beborn Beton

Intergalactic - Beastie Boys

Life on Mars? - David Bowie

Mercury - Sarah Fimm

What could be more fitting than When I Look To the Sky by Train?

Another one by Train: Drops of Jupiter

Martian Boogie by Brownsville Station.

Although not specifically about the stars or space, Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra achieved popularity as the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Slime Creatures From Outer Space by Weird Al Yankovic

I Want an Alien for Christmas by Fountains of Wayne

Apogee and Astronomy by Jethro Tull

Rocket Man by Pearls Before Swine (not the Elton John song)

I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper by Sarah Brightman. Probably my favorite disco song.
