I’m looking to top up my music list, and whilst iTunes is okay its recommendation service seems to be smoking a great big fat crack rock (see: recommending I buy Alicia Keys because I’ve got the Resident Evil: Extinction soundtrack. WTF?)
I tried to check out Pandora, but the motherfuckers have been told to not allow anyone outside the US to use it so they sniff my Australian IP address and block me before I can even see what’s going on.
All I’d like is a website where I can type in the names of songs, albums or artists that I like and it spits out recommendations. Any links are appreciated.
It won’t immediately spit out recommendations but www.allmusic.com has the most comprehensive biographies of artists with lists of influences, people influenced by them, similar bands, other people whose songs they have performed etc. You can look up genres and get lists of every band within that genre.
Oh and it’s full of listenable samples for most stuff.
I thought I’d read about similar sites in Wired, and when I searched their site to try to find a mention of a similar site, I found this blog article linked from the Wired blog, about proxies for Pandora.
Thanks for the recommendations so far. They’re both kind of what I’m looking for and will do in a pinch.
Specifically I remember a few years ago there was a website where you’d type in an artist and it would essentially draw a “map” between that artist and other with similar sounds/styles or that were recommended by other users who liked that artist.
If I could remember what that website was I would be happy.
Music map looks really cool and I will have to check it out further when I get home.
I use and get a lot of musical recommendations from last.fm. It’s my musical website of choice.
LivePlasma is another useful tool for finding music and movies that you’ll like.
I found Last.FM from the wired article ZipperJJ linked to. It looks interesting but I’m feeling a bit lazy re: signing up for things at the moment.
LivePlasma looks very much like what I’m after too.
Thanks guys.

It’s something neat that recommends music…
Brendon Small
This isn’t what the OP is looking for, but I think it deserves a mention…
I love finetune.com for listening to internet music while I’m at work. It’s awesome, and it’s free!
It works like this… you have to build a playlist of at least 45 songs, no more than three songs from the same artist. I like it because I don’t get tired of my IPOD songs songs quick when I work out at lunch.
