I’m just curious what music dopers listen to that makes them have to sing out loud.
I’m not big on singing myself due to a strong lack of talent, but when I listen to Tom Lehrer I can’t help but sing. I get so geeked I play air piano.

Lots of music makes me sing … Anything Box, Iris, Mesh, Apoptygma Berzerk … all great stuff and I can’t help myself but sing along.
It’s almost impossible to keep me from singing to my Phantom of the Opera soundtrack.
Except sometimes I get teary during “All I Ask of You.”
the following musicals: My Fair Lady, Singin In The Rain, Guys and Dolls, Brigadoon, On The Town, Chicago, Cabaret…i know there must be some more…
the following songs: Do You Believe In Magic, Build Me Up Buttercup, anything by Joni Mitchell, anything by Boston, anything by No Doubt, Save Ferris, Catch-22, Fleetwood Mac, Phil Collins, The Beatles, Reel Big Fish, The Monkees, Def Lepard, if there is a swing/big band song with a vocalist i’ll sing along…
songs that have strong, gutsy vocals i enjoy…can’t do Celine or Mariah…ugh (yet i can do Joni, i know, don’t ask - the woman is in a category all her own). And as much as i truly love Jimi Hendrix…he’s difficult to accompany.
uh well…yeah, that about covers it, my musical tastes are slightly eclectic…if i paid more attention to opera lyrics, i’d probably sing those too…
The Bobs
I tend to sing along with just about anything, especially if I’m distracted. I do have favorites that I particularly enjoy singing along with, though. Drinking songs, pirate songs, pirate drinking songs (is that redundant?), and such Faire fare often get an accompaniment. I also like to sing/sing along with filk and lots of rock, particularly Eagles and Dire Straits.
I sing a lot. Fortunately, I usually do it when I’m alone.
I don’t do a lot of singing along, but there are plenty of songs that make me sing the refrain, or even the whole song, for hours on end after hearing it. Pretty much anything from My Fair Lady or Sound of music do this to me.
Also, “Nice Weather for Ducks” by Lemonjelly has this effect on me. Download NOW all those who don’t know this song - it’s ace.
All togther now - "All the ducks are swimming in the water, tra la la la la la, tra la la la la la . . . "
I usually sing to songs by: U2 and Frank Sinatra and at times Eric Clapton.
At the ongoing Montreal dopefest, this past friday night over diner, the radio played Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t worry, Be Happy” in the restoraunt, and a good 10 of us, including Eonwe, Curious Cannuck, and myself were caught singing it.
Was quite the scene.
What a great topic!
I’ve been listening to a lot of African pop recently – since I often don’t even know what language they’re singing in, it makes it hard to sing along – but there’s one Zap Mama song that I’ve got the chorus down, phonetically, so I always sing along.
In English: Liz Phair.
“Why Didn’t You Call Me” by Macy Gray.
Lots of things in the past have made me sing…just about any song I like. Today, though, I had an odd one. I was listening to a string quartet cover the Foo Fighters (amazingly, it’s very good), and somehow the instrumental, classical take on those songs made me sing each one.
Better Than Ezra. - The way Kevin Griffin sings just rips my heart out sometimes and I have to join in when he does!
Fleming and John - I only wish I could sing as powerfully and with such range as Fleming.
Jude - what a great fucking falsetto. Soooo good.
Anything by the Beach Boys… I love singing about happy summertime songs while riding down the road
Also, most of the songs from the movie Grease.
Either of the two NY Dolls studio albums. Especially “Puss and Boots” and “Who Are The Mystery Girls”. I’m always playing them at work and singing happily along and everyone there thinks my taste in music is weird.
They’re all either Nickelback/Creed/Godsmack or Eminem fans though, so what do they know about music. I doubt anybody will be listening to those asshats 30 years after the fact.
Jon
I sing along to almost anything I know the words to.
…and, often, things I don’t. And music without words. And music playing only in my head. And…
Actually, from my point of view life is pretty much just a series of song cues.
I’m with Orange Skinner. If I know the words, I’ll sing.
Same here, jr8! Reminds me of a scene last week, playing poker with the family…
DAD: (wanders in) How you doing, hon?
MOM: Oh, I’m staying alive.
QB: (recognizing her cue) Live live live live stayin’ alive! Stayin’ alive!
QUANTUM SISTER: She should have to ante an extra chip for that.
They would probably find my habit more tolerable if I could carry a tune.
