This bugs the hell out of me with these forums. I want to hear and know about new music, but I don’t want it to be things that I get thrown at me on entertainment-not-news portals such as Bing, MSN, Yahoo, and so on. I do get my fix with netlabels, freebie bandcamps, radio show rips and such, but no one ever talks about it. I’m also not artist-based at all. Working in the industry with all those famous people took away being starstruck with anyone. I wasn’t even starstruck with David Bowie – it was more, am I going to get on with him? I did as we shared the same sense of humour.
I would say about 70% of my listening list is sourced from these things. Older friends hear it and think it’s fantastic but I’m at a loss to tell them what it is other than where I got it because all the titles are just the date and maybe the name of the radio show, or the titles are in kanji or wingdings (which is a big trend in the underground right now).
There is one album that I can name as the sort-of Dark Side of the Moon of the past say, 15 years. It is Macintosh Plus Floral Shoppe. It’s a great album and if you want to talk about the influence spreading like mad … that one’s it. It wasn’t exactly a sleeper, but it was released online through Bandcamp in its very earliest days, didn’t trouble any charts that I know of, and inspired a whole lot of people. Part of it is because Ramona Xavier (the artist’s real name) uses aliases and pseudonyms far more than Richard James (Aphex Twin) ever did, and it seems like a lot of people can’t comprehend it much less deal with it.
when i got high for the first time i had the instrumental version of ‘limerence’ by yves tumor, it just blended in with everything; myself laying on my bed getting baked while contemplating about life, my room a fucking mess with little to no chance of it getting clean anytime soon, the room getting more darker as time goes by… it just blended in elegantly in ways even i can’t put into words.
Well, might be time to start a “Who’s listening to new music?” thread… or, if you believe that no one here listens to contemporary stuff, a “Where can I find and discuss new music?” thread.
.
But I gotta say, those dozen or so songs from the ‘80s that they play over and over at the mall are awesome, man… [duckin’, runnin’]
Hehe, or one of us could start a “What music released in the last two decades have you listened to while high?” thread. Since it technically has a rolling time frame, it’d always be current-ish. My answer would still be “pretty much all of it”, but it’d be selected from a different set.
So, here’s one that wouldn’t be in that recent set, and three that would.
(so long, but worth it)
(so short and tasty)
(I’m a total prostitute for the sampling and production, synths and lyrics of this one)
First heard this one while I was on a long road trip. Fortunately, my car’s radio can rewind and replay. I think I probably kept backing it up and listening to it again for an hour. When I had to stop to pee and shut the car off, I had to quit listening to it for the time being. I didn’t know who Panda Bear was at the time. I then looked him up and found he’s a member of Animal Collective. I always felt of them like I feel about Frank Zappa: interesting, but not what I regularly go to for entertainment.
I eat up most of what he does solo, though. If he’s doing something with Sonic Boom from Spacemen3, even more so.
I tried to post them with thumbnails, but I haven’t been able to do so for some time. I’ve asked but people ignore my question. I’ve tried looking it up, but I was unable to find out how to do so. I kind of like the surprise element, but if people really want to know, it’s all music from the SNES Donkey Kong Country 1&2 games. The 3rd game had great music, but not AS amazing as the first two, with a different composer.
OK, thanks for the clarification. I also have trouble posting videos with thumbnails, and I have also read the explanations, and I still don’t get it either.
I just came across this 1970 live Pink Floyd performance in the KQED studios, and it’s definitely the right stuff for this thread. And even if you’re not high, if that’s a favorite era for Pink Floyd, it’s just great to have it on in the background.
"Listening to music while stoned is a whole new world…[however]There are some kinds of music that you must never, ever listen to. For example, you should never, ever listen to Myron Floren music. Or Dick Contino music. Or Obveess Yeearoldf (?) music.
