I know a fair number of you lot are into playing music. Do any of you have any web sites that offer tips on using microphones and other equipment or have a message board for asking such things? Specifically, I know nothing about using a microphone with my trombone or other brass instruments, and since I don’t have a mic, I need to find out exactly what it is that I’m looking for.

IANAE, but…
Are you planning using the mic for sound re-inforcement (i.e. PA, playing publicly) or recording? Not that some mics can’t do both, but it’ll have an impact on other stuff you may need.
Some brass instruments can produce fairly high SPLs (sound pressure levels) close up. This can overload some (mostly cheaper) mics. Then again, you can just move the mic away (well, you might be able to - depends on how much overspill from other instruments you can tolerate).
So… I guess the answer is that we need a bit more info. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss this off the board…
