Musician with net knowledge please read.

I have recently aquired a trumpet and a guitar… which fills me with much glee. I haven’t played for a few years and I feel like I’ve found my soul again.
The problem is that I have no sheet music to play off. And my memory is not too good. I’m having trouble remembering even the notes for “When the saints go marching in”!!!

I am an accomplished trumpeter but a beginner guitarist and checked out the cost of purchasing some individual or even collections of various tunes but was shocked with the high prices.

Does anyone know where to look on the net for some FREE sheet music? Everyone I look up say’s FREE but when you go in they all cost $$$$.

Any tricks from the musically savvy?

Sheet music is for suckers. Why pay money when you’ve got two perfectly good ears? You ought to be able to figure out most things you want to play, and using your ears will have the added bonus of improving your memory.

Sorry, disclaimer for the above post, since friendly facial expressions are not easy to convey over the internet: I’m not calling you a sucker. I was just trying to be “cute.”

There’s lots of guitar tab music available - that’s the notation with the 6 strings and fret numbers on it. It’s really easy to pick up (though I can’t sight-read it). Just find a song/artist you like, and google their name with the word “TAB”. I don’t know of any online resources for free standard sheet music.

I have printed off most (if not all) of the charts at this site even though they are of the “lead sheet” variety.

There are still some free pages at the membership site Vision Music.

It all depends on how detailed you want for what you’re playing.

For just playing chords (and the occassional tab)
olga
and
Tab Robot

are pretty broad based and you can find a lot on them.

If you’re looking for more specific artists, the easiest way to find them is through The Ultimate Band List (UBL). Just do a search for the artist and sometimes the fans (or even the artist) will have the chrods/sheetmusic.

One other place I can suggest is Musicnotes which allows you to download individual pieces of sheet music for a nominal charge. It also allows you to preview the first page as well (which is ironic as there’s the occassional song that’s only 1 or 2 pages long).

Post if you’re looking for any particular artists that you can’t find.

Thanks for that I’ll start looking.
