I don’t usually have any jobs NYE – it’s the time of year when things are insanely competitive, and I was lucky (sort of, it was still a bizarre night to have a paying job) to get something via a friend of a friend on Christmas eve, because “I” (I book generally, which means take care of contacts and get calls, so I guess I get the credit, although everything’s shared equally among two or three players) don’t promote, because there is no set group, just a probable likelihood that if the pay is good enough, I can convince some of my best boys to show up (and give me a ride, hello, guitar player with a new cargo van, I’d rather pay you twenty or forty bucks and give you some home-baked croissants as a gift than grab a cab).
Just thinking in my head about stuff like “Auld Lang Syne” – I faintly remember Dr. John did a kind of odd version of it on one of his HomeSpun tapes. Anyway, not playing myself, and I don’t like going out on NYE in general, much less if I’m not getting paid, so I’m going to catsit the weekend for my sister while she, her husband, and my nephew are at the coast.
What are doper-musicians’ thoughts on this time of year for jobs and what are you all doing? I’ll still probably try to get some cool arrangements for SP of old chestnuts like “ALS” on my nephews little schroeder piano, but not doing anything. You?
