Must know information about sound machines!!

I’m trying to find a SMALL noise machine that
a.) makes a steady sound (like an air conditioner) rather than a rhythmic one (like the ones that are supposed to sound like ocean waves, etc.)

and

b.) is LOUD!!! I’m not kidding here! Are there any that are JUST as loud as, say, an air conditioner? I’ve never heard one that is!! Help! I really need this for some upcoming trips!!

How about something like this? White noise is a steady hissing or rushing sound, similar to an air conditioner or a TV tuned to an empty channel. I’m not sure how loud it is, but I’d imagine it’s at least as loud as an A/C, which aren’t all that loud, IME.

Or you could just tune a portable radio to an unused frequency.

And if you tell us a little more about what you’re trying to accomplish, we might be able to offer more useful suggestions.

The prerecorded machines are too annoying for words. (An FM radio station would not be consistent enough-- too much sound variation. Nice idea, though.) I have LOTS of problems with sleeping patterns and absolutely cannot get to sleep without a LOUD fan. But I’m taking several trips this year and I don’t want to either have to PACK the fan or spend lots of time trying to find a Walmart to buy one once I get there!

White noise generators aren’t usually prerecorded. The sound is generated the same way radio static is: thermal noise whioch occurs naturally in solid state devices. The ones I’ve heard give a nice, consistent sound. I think you’d like it.

Have you considered getting a small fan like this and using DoperWisdom to help you make it louder (such as by uh…doing the equivilent of sticking baseball cards in it’s spokes)? Would that be small enough to pack?

The question remains: where can one buy a small white noise generator? The one you linked to is 8x7x5". I too would like to find a smaller one, small enough to travel with.

Seeking small white noisy machine, must love sleep.

Those are the UPS shipping box dimensions, not the unit dimensions. From the link:

I thought that was pretty small.

Thanks for the correction, I guess that counts as small.

But still, I don’t see why it needs to be any larger than a battery-powered portable speaker.

Anise have you tried using a white noise machine? I don’t think it is a quarter as soothing/lulling as a fan. Just thought you’d wanna know.

Sharper Image makes a little sound machine - it’s about the size of a cell phone, I guess. It has earphones, but you could hook up small speakers if you wanted.

It has all the various nature sounds, plus a heartbeat one (which I find creepy) and a white noise sound. I’d link to one, but I can’t get the links to specific products to work right.

They also make small travel alarm clocks with all the sounds.
