"Must See TV" Returns to NBC

“The Book of Daniel” - NBC (9:00pm EST)

Well, thanks to Donald Wildmon, James Dobson and the other usual suspects, I’ve just added an “appointment” to an otherwise sparse primetime viewing schedule.

Two NBC affiliates are refusing to air this program (Little Rock AR and Terre Haute IN) due to pressure from Wildmon-Dobson. The WB affiliate in Little Rock has picked it up though.

*"Bob Waliszewski, of **Focus on the Family’s ** teen ministries, said the show portrayed Christ as a “namby-pamby frat boy who basically winks at every sin and perversity under the sun.”

“When the pastor’s teen son is sexually active and having many romps with his 15-year-old girlfriend, this Jesus says, `A kid has to be a kid,’” Waliszewski said.

“I don’t think NBC would have portrayed a Muslim cleric or a Buddhist monk, the Dalai Lama, in a show this way. Why? Because they know to do so would be mean-spirited and insensitive.”*

On the other hand, perhaps Muslim clerics, Buddhist monks and the Dalai Lama represent a religious culture and lifestyle with which the average American TV-viewer is woefully unfamiliar. Imagine trying to craft a TV script and characters that might resound with a viewing audience that is primarily made up of insular Christians.

I wonder too if Muslim clerics, Buddhist monks and the Dalai Lama are all that thin-skinned and prone to “victimology” as a substantial number of American Christians seem to be…
