The other day my ankle was a bit sore when I walked on it. The ache moved above the ankle yesterday. The weird thing is that the tendon (?) above the ankle creaks when I move my foot. Weird, eh?
Things like that come and go. They can mean something though. Overuse while rubbing can cause inflammation or a muscle spasm that can make you fall. Sometimes it can be brought on by sleeping in certain positions. Sleeping face down with the toes extended may cause difficulty the next day. Stretching can help or hurt.

Try a mix of acetone and transmission fluid to get the joint moving. That should stop the creaking.
