My birthday pit

I mentioned in passing, in another thread, that I suspected my roommate was going to get me a fire pit for my birthday. She’d asked me to move a motorcycle off the patio, because she ‘had some ideas for the patio’. And I had to move it Saturday. Why Saturday? Well, maybe she just wants a clear space for when she beautifies the back yard. She worked Friday night through Sunday night, so I knew she’d be sleeping during the day. That night I remembered that she’d cleaned the patio chairs the previous week. Wait a minute… Chairs fit to sit on, and she wants the bike moved. I’ll be she’s going to get me a fire pit for my birthday!

I got home last night, changed out of my work clothes, and noticed the back blinds were closed. That’s unusual. She handed me a beer and told me to put my zoriis on. She led me to the back yard, and there was a little metal fire pit with a ‘fire log’ burning in it. She was sorry my birthday present was late, but the weather’s been schlezzy. We talked and drank beer and ate pizza and watched the fire and put real wood on to burn. And she got me to do some pruning on some hanging branches. She says I have a beautiful back yard, and I never use it. I’m going to enjoy it, dammit! :stuck_out_tongue:

What a kind thing for her to do! Have you toasted marshmallows yet?

Happy belated Birthday, John. Mine’s next week, I wonder if my “roommate” (Hubby) will remember.

Very cool! We are “doing” our back yard this summer and I cannot wait to have a fire pit! Happy (late) Birthday!

Happy belated birthday, Johnny! Here’s your chance to make s’mores. :stuck_out_tongue:

No marshmallows yet. I suspect it will happen, though. And hot dogs.

Thanks for the belated wishes. My boss and cow-orker are taking me to the pub for lunch tomorrow.

Of course now that there’s a fire pit, I need to get new sliding screen doors. The existing ones don’t. (Not without manhandling, anyway.) A trip to Home Despot is in the cards today.

And the middle bedroom needs to be cleared out so we can renovate.

And if the battery and battery charger were to go somewhere else, the front window may get new curtains.

Is this how it starts?

Hey, hubby remembers! He’s getting owner’s box seat tickets to Emerald Downs. I like horseys. We’ll get to go to the paddock and the prep area. We’re also taking a class on how to bet, you know what all the weird bets mean, like exacta & trifecta.

Yes, yes it is.

Congratulations your birthday present is going to cost you thousands

I bought a replacement screen door yesterday, more skookum than the one I abused. It was half an inch too tall. So I went back to The Home Despot and returned it today. I bought another, more lightly-built (like the original) door. It was the shortest they had. The wheels didn’t retract enough to use it, so it’s going back. (BTW, it’s about a 50-mile round trip each time.) Roomie, handy as she is, straightened the bent metal on the original door, and it looks pretty good. We tried to put it back on. I think we’ve found out why it wouldn’t slide: The top and bottom rollers on the leading edge don’t retract at all. Nevertheless, it kind of works. At this stage I think I’ll buy a whole new screen door set, including the frame, and have it installed.

Some paint was burned off the fire pit cover Wednesday, and we’ve had rain. While I was getting the screen I picked up some high-temperature black paint (‘stove black’) and some steel wool. Roomie touched it up.

I’m grilling swordfish steaks tonight.
