My boss says 1990 dance hit "The Power" might be "too ethnic"

Another person in my department put together a “2008: (Company) Year in Review” PowerPoint presentation for today’s companywide meeting. The presentation’s soundtrack is the 1990 dance hit “The Power.” You know: “I GOT the POW-ah!” They showed it to me for the first time this morning, and instead of laughing about how we’ve moved from one cliche to another (previously, most company presentations were set to Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time”), I just said, “Wow, it’s 9th grade all over again.” And then my boss said in all seriousness, “What do you think? Too ethnic?”

This company actually is one of the most ethnically diverse ones I’ve ever worked for. Regardless, I didn’t bother explaining to her that “The Power” is, in fact, one of the whitest songs I can think of. Whiter than “Wichita Lineman”! Just look at the list of Media Appearances towards the bottom of the song’s Wikipedia page. It’s a whitebread “comedy” montage and commercial anthem.

My boss and The Office’s Michael Scott could lead one hell of a diversity seminar. One time, she was worried about putting a small photo of one of our black warehouse personnel in a company publication because he has cornrows!

I wasn’t aware that gay was now an ethnicity.

Does your boss realize we now have an African-American president? If not, you should probably break the news slowly.

Hmm, first “Big Time” and then “The Power” as a soundtrack for a corporate presentation on the Year In Review? What industry is this?

'Cause if it’s in any way related to the financial crisis/meltdown I find it rather inappropriate… I would go with Jane’s Addiction, Been Caught Stealing.

It’s not at all related to the financial industry. Use of those songs is entirely related to a lack of imagination.

And I’m sure my boss knows about the President, and I’m equally sure she’s not happy about it.

It’s not ethnic ENOUGH. You should edit it to “I’ve got the Black Power!” and see what your boss thinks.

Yeah, like I told my sister, I could see her argument if the song was Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power.”

Well it’s interesting how “ethnic”= “black”… How about suggesting Lou Monte’s song Lazy Mary (in Calabrese/Sicilian dialect of Italian)?

Maybe this would be a better choice. Its “ethnic” without sounding ethnic, and the cymbal crashes would make excellent transition points.

I have taken it upon myself to solve your problem.
Here is your new background music.
