What the heck. If Elendil’s Heir can be elected president, I can give this thing a shot.
Consider this post to be the formal announcement of my intention to run for the position of Prime Minister of Canada…

Well I’d vote for you, but certain international laws are getting in my way.
I’m not specifically familiar with Canada’s political system, but I understood that one couldn’t run for Prime Minister. One has to run for Parliament, then do whatever political maneuvering to become named head of one’s party, then become the majority party in Parliament, no?
Yes, but a political party always goes into the election with an established leader. That leader then stands for, and must be elected in, a specific electorate, as a normal, run-of-the-mill member of parliament. But the leader is also in effect saying to the country as a whole “if the party that I lead gets a majority in parliament, then you’re going to get me as Prime Minister”.
Canada needs more Dopers in politics.
So, what party are you going to run for? And what riding are you going to run in? (Just think… if you run for the NDP, you could end up as matt_mcl’s boss! )
And interesting things happen if the party wins but the leader doesn’t.
Thanks for the link to my Presidential campaign thread. Always good to have another Doper seeking national leadership!
What Canadian political party’s platform is closest to your own views? What three issues do you feel most strongly about, and what would you do about them? What current Canadian political figure do you feel most simpatico with? What past Prime Minister do you most admire, and why?
Here’s hoping we can exchange visits in Washington and Ottawa soon…
Count on my vote. Harper has been dull and relatively uneventful as PM. Although this is better than the embarrassing linguistic gaffes, global ignorance, and scandals of the Cretien regime, it’s just no fun. Now a Doper for PM, that’s something. Just let me know when the campaign trail crosses the GTA.
No worries, when Canada owns the world I’ll get that pesky little trouble out of the way.
Can I say Independent? No? Okay, then I’ll have to put on my orange beret for the NDP (or wear a red scarf for the Liberals in a pinch). matt_mcl will be the cabinet member in charge of being wicked awesome.
Thank you, Mr. President(ial Candidate), and I look forward to maintaining cordial relations with our neighbours to the south. [del]Just up until the point where we annex your country to ours as part of the whole world-taking-over business, but don’t worry, we’ll be really really polite and nice about it.[/del]
I’ve voted for NDP in the past–they’re very left-wing, populist, and socialist in their views, which are closest to mine, and they support a working public health care system, affordable education (especially post-secondary), and sweeping environmental policies, the three issues nearest to my heart. I can’t really think of any political figure in Canada I’m simpatico with currently right now, but I like Trudeau’s style and Tommy Douglas’s vision.
But… but… y-you mean I don’t get to have linguistic gaffes, global ignorance, and scandals when I’m Prime Minister?
