my cat is almost trained

A while back I had posted that I had a new roommate called Jimmy the Chin, and I have been trying to get him potty trained. I started w/his kitty litter box next to the toilet and within a week, I added a mixing bowl, set in the ring and filled that up w/kitty litter. He would use it to pee, but once I removed the kitty litter box, this was his new litter “box” (or bowl shall we say).

Everything that I have read has been to then start pulling his feet out one at a time so that he learns where to place them and how to balance. He started with a front paw out, so I only had to teach him to remove the other front paw, which he learned quickly. His back paws have been more of a prb. Most of the issues, though, are that I don’t see him go too often, so I can’t reinforce this behavior.

My solution, after a few months of this, was to start creating a hole in the center of the bowl and slowly make it bigger. What started as a quarter sized hole is now about 10" or so (this is over the course of about 45 days). He is adapting to it, but Sunday, for the first time ever, I found that he pooped on the bathroom rug and then tried to cover it by flipping up the corners and stuff. I cleaned everything up and washed the rug and detailed the bathroom. He has since used the toilet again, and by the end of this week, I’ll make that hole a little bigger. It’s almost to the point where I can remove it completely, and that’ll make me quite happy.

Good luck Rubes. I tried this with my cats, almost exactly like you’re doing, and got one completely trained. The ever evil Violet just wouldn’t be consistent once I was down to maybe an inch of bowl around the sides. Patience is key and I guess I didn’t have enough. Now I’m thinking of one of those flushable boxes.

The list I used for tips mentioned going back a step when improper elimination occurs and a more grippy seat might help, too. Though you may be over that bump anyway. I envy you your cooperative cat!

TMI to follow:

Sure it wasn’t a dangler?
My kitties go in a Booda Dome (round with a covered, ventilated lid), but sometimes my bad boy will come flying outta there and drop some bombs in front of it. He then kicks litter out of the box to cover it up.
It’s especially bad when they’ve managed to get a stray hair of mine in the digestive system.
Poop-on-a-rope!

I gave the bathroom a thorough cleaning, and it Jimmie is back to using the commode. I’m hoping that was just a one time occurance.
