No, we don’t. We wrap them in the better part of a roll of paper towels and shove them all the way down into the garbage. And he yowls and hisses and goes crazy insane, knocks the garbage can over, digs out the paper towel wad, shred it to pieces and flips the condom around the living room for 20 minutes or so before he eats it.
Okay, well he did that twice. Now we flip a coin to see who gets to take the used condom all the way out to the dumpster. The loser gets the dry spot when s/he gets back.
I can’t imagine a piece of paper slightly over 1/4" long and under 1/4" wide would hurt a canary.
One time I was with a group at the home of a Chinese friend. She had made steam buns and they were great. I took the first one and gobbled it down without paying much attention. After I hav
d finished about half of the second I glanced around and noticed that some others were peeling something off the bottom of their buns.
She had placed them on wax paper discs for cooking and I had eaten mine, waxed paper and all.
I had a young, female client complain to me once that her yorkie would do all that it could to get hold of shitty diapers or used pads. The dog would shake the shitty diapers furiously, until the shit literally flew. He would tear the pads to shreds. When she finished talking, I could only stand there with flies going in and outa my mouth. BLEECH.
EMERGENCY!!! ok, so I have just discovered that my cat has eaten a WHOLE sanitary pad wrapper!
It looks like she chewed pieces apart and then swallowed them, not just swallowed the entire long thing whole. It has been about 8 hours since I have been in that bathroom to notice when she could have eaten it. Should I try to induce vomiting? Or feed her lots of soft food so it could hopefully pass through her system easier? Anyone else have this happen??
Dainty, this is a 6 year old thread. No one is paying attention to it, so I notified a moderator to see if this can be made into a new thread.
A whole sanitary napkin wrapper could be a problem. Unfortunately you can’t know whether she really chewed it up based on a few small pieces left over. You can try to bulk up her diet, but cats generally are difficult to make them eat more than they want to, unlike dogs that can be given pieces of bread or something. Don’t do that with a cat, and don’t make her eat any extra food if she doesn’t want any. Inducing vomiting at home is also not recommended, what you can give a person or dog to make them vomit will damage a cat’s esophagus and then you have more problems.
Don’t panic yet. Give her a chance to pass what she ate, but give it only 48 hours from when you think she ingested the wrapper. If, before the 48 hours is up, she starts to vomit, won’t eat, or eats then vomits, strains in the litterbox, has diarrhea, or anything else unusual like a painful abdomen or stool she’s unable to pass, get her to a vet asap. If 48 hours go by uneventfully and she’s had stool with the wrapper in it pass, then she’s fine. If that 48 hours goes by and she seems fine but hasn’t passed stool with the wrapper in it, get to a vet asap.
If you want to be the most cautious, take her to a vet today so they can x-ray her and see if there’s already a problem. She may need abdominal surgery to remove it if it causes an obstruction. It’s already too late for them to try to induce vomiting.
Since WhyNot has not been on since 11:57 PM yesterday I assume WhyNot is sleeping, I understand your concern for your feline friend but this thread is from 2007 and old. Around here we call it a Zombie thread. You may get more replies if you start a new topic.
My experience with cats is that they eat and pass a variety of odd objects.
A cat’s digestive system is intended for whole animals, bones and all. A bit of paper should not be a problem.
Keep an eye out for trouble though- if there is any, it will be serious.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! my cat is sleeping right now, but of course Im not. Im panicking and researching, deciding if I need to take her to emergency. I really appreciate your answer, it is very thorough and exactly what I needed to hear right now
How do you know so much? are you a vet? or an animal lover?
also - if this thread is too old (I got another message saying that) how did you know it was here?
I am BRAND new at this, this was my first post. So seriously, if you saw it, why does it matter how old it is? just trying to understand. thanks again!
there’s nothing wrong with bumping an old thread to add relevant info or ask a related question.
But this thread is old enough that starting a new one might have been good. It’s sort of a judgement call.
But don’t worry and do check the litterbox seems to be all the advice you need at the moment.
I’m a veterinary technician at a big, busy, large city animal emergency room. We field these phone calls every day. My concern with the sanitary pad wrapper is they’re usually plastic, and even if it’s biodegradable, it won’t break down in the cat’s GI tract before it needs to pass. If it really is in tiny bits, it may not be too bad, but if it’s in chunks or largely intact, it may become an issue.
I hope your kitty ends up being just fine. I work nights, so it’s my bedtime now and I won’t be checking back until afternoon. G’night.
My cat eats socks. If you let him work on it long enough, he will devour the entire thing. In the last three months alone he has eaten over 50% of nine individual socks. I never see anything in his poop. He never throws anything sock-like back up. He is a big solid cat, and we tell everyone he is just an animated stuffed toy (my childhood stuffed toy was stuffed with old stockings). He also eats plastic…he will chew on the plastic bag the toilet paper comes in, plastic sheet protectors (but oddly, not if there is a sheet of paper in it) and occasionally plastic storage boxes or plastic cat food containers. And he will eat his way through the packaging of bags of kitty treats, which is why I have a cookie jar for them. I have stopped worrying about his gut.
Oh, and once he ate the bottom portions of a pair of my son-in-law’s sweat pants. About three inches off the bottom of each leg.
Hi there! I too, found this through the New Posts, which is weird, because it should have come up in my User CP, but whatever…
Welcome to the SDMB! I assume you found us by googling something about cat eating sanitary wrapper. I’m so glad I shared that embarrassing tidbit that led you here years later.
Yes, he did eat whole paper backings from sanitary pads without ill effect. They were the waxed paper kind, though, not the plastic pouch style. The plastic he would nibble on, poke a bunch of holes in and not actually swallow. I switched to a DivaCup and eliminated the problem.
He’s still alive, living with my ex-husband. I haven’t asked his new partner if the cat’s still eating condoms!
ETA: Now I have a cat who steals and gnaws on Q-Tips. Used or clean, doesn’t matter to her. Q-Tips are nommable.
