A recall has begun on one of the nutball commissioners, Lucy Ebel. Today she held a press conference at the county building. This is how it went:
She seems to not understand that constitution thing she pretendes to be “passionate about protecting”.

It is quite indescribable, and many brain cells would die in the attempt, that’s just how stupid it is.
She’s leading people in weird chants, like she’s going to summon Cthulhu to wipe out Ottawa County. That’s the best way I can describe it.
I don’t know how well that serves her cause to stay in power.
She leads a small crowd to chant three times, “Jesus is Lord in Ottawa County.” And then she gets the crowd to say - again, three times – “I See Mice in Ottawa County.” At least, I think that’s what they said. Audio was a little fuzzy. Anyway, she seemed satisfied at the end, so maybe they have a rodent problem.
Not quite “Sieg Heil” or “Il Duce Ha Sempre Ragione”. Not quite.
Huh. Maybe they backed down and stopped blocking non-members. I could play it too.
I’m just as pleased not to be living in Ottawa County.

ETA: has anybody tried pointing out that, if Jesus is lord in Ottawa County, and there’s vice in Ottawa County, then Jesus must be in favor of vice?

In any case, she and her supporters are all raving nutjobs.
That whole Ottawa Impact bunch are loons. I would call them Christian Nationalists/cultists. I’m from the same side of Michigan, the, “conservative” side, and I’m very glad I don’t live there. I shudder to think how prevalent these attitudes are in my county and I just don’t know it.
And yes they’re still at it. I hope they all get voted out. Anyone wan’t to bet when they do. They’ll claim the election was, “rigged.”

I came in to post this. It’s also very interesting that the board filed a previous lawsuit for “defamation” against the Daily Beast for reporting on their activities. The lawsuit was dismissed.
So much for separation of church and state.

Rocklin and Roseville are the two largest cities by population in the county, and still deep red (until redistricting, we had the “honor” of being represented by Tom McClintock). At the last election the candidates who are members of the local megachurch took over the school boards and started implementing the “Moms For Liberty” playbook. They are doing everything they can to make life unpleasant for the students and teachers.
So believe me, Ottawa County, I feel your pain.
An update.
What happens when incompetent people hire incompetent people? Nothing good.
Background on the administrator who was now placed on leave:
- The same year these do-nothing, no-brained right-wing nutjobs got elected to the Ottawa County board, John Gibbs, a do-nothing, no-brained right-wing nutjob in his own right, ran an incompetent campaign for U.S. Congress. Got his ass handed to him, because, well, he’s a dog-turd of a human being with no actual government experience.
- So what do the newly-elected right-wing nutjobs on the Ottawa County Board do as their first (maybe second) action at their first meeting in January 2023? They fire the competent county admin and they hire Gibbs to run the county. Executive director. Top dog over a $12-million+ budget overnight, despite having no experience running anything in his life, and no experience working with or for a county. His only government experience before being appointed to the Trump admin (but never actually working a day in it) was as a far-right conspiracy theorist on the Internet.
- Within weeks of starting his job as executive director of the county in 2023, he asked the Board to let him create a new position, so that someone else could actually do the work he was hired to do. Why? Because he quickly realized that he was in way over his head. No joke.
- But it gets worse: They whittled the candidate list for this new position down to two: An older, experienced gentleman who had every qualification listed in the job posting and a younger dude with none of the qualifications, but with a history of all of the right-wing nuttery we come to expect. Guess who Gibbs hired? The young dude, so-- and this is a quote from someone who was a witness to the hiring-- Gibbs could “boss him around.”) There’s now a lawsuit against the county from the guy they didn’t hire.
- And now they’ve placed Gibbs on leave because, well, I guess he wasn’t being an asshole in the manner they had hoped he would. Different assholery that didn’t line up with their assholery.
- So he’s telling the Board that he’ll resign if they pay him $630,000. No wait, now he’s offering them a deal! He’ll resign this week only for the low, low price of $420,000! Board chair is saying more like $210,000. But hey, let’s just suspend him with pay until they figure it all out. Really, who cares? It’ll just end up in court eventually anyway.
On a positive note, several sane Republicans (including at least one Republican who was beat in 2022, as well as a Democrat or two) have announced their candidacy to oust these clowns in November. Plus, none of the clowns have yet declared they’re running for re-election, so…fingers crossed!
Also happening: numerous lawsuits against the county, repeated botched attempts to fire the Health Department Director because she had the audacity to implement mask mandates during the pandemic, a botched settlement with said HD director, and the county’s millions of dollars in legal fees being paid to a law firm owned by friend of the Board’s Chair. Real fucking clown show that’s going about as well as I expected when I started this thread.
But the important thing is that they and their friends will all get lots of tasty, tasty cash, courtesy of the taxpayers.
It’s all about the grift.
