My Dad was on Maximum Exposure!

Well, it wasn’t my Dad exactly. It was his test.

My Dad ran the Nuclear Reactor Saftey division at Sandia Labs for a long time. He set up a test of a nuclear power plant containment wall. They built a 12 foot thick wall and, to test the wall, ran an F4 Phantom into the wall at about 480 mph. The deep dent in the wall was about a foot IIRC.

You can find the footage here

Anyway, Max X ran the footage. Woo Hoo!

When I first clicked on this, I was going to point out that, given much of what’s on Max Ex, you may not want to widely advertise you have a relative on the show…

… but that was way cool stuff - I saw it on the broadcast.

That is cool. When are they going to use bigger jets? Like most guys, I have the deep need to see bigger explosions.

At least, he wasn’t on the Max Ex list at the end of each show. That would be very, very bad, methinks.

Is there a picture of the wall afterwards?

I never saw one. According to my Dad after the test the biggest piece of the F4, except for part of the wings, was about the size of a fist. The wings were wider than the wall and were sheared off. He said the wall looked dented but not too badly considering the fact that a jet hit it at almost 500 mph.

The cool thing is that I got it on tape for my Dad. I sent him the MPEGS but the TV footage is much bigger.

I used to have a set of 8X10’s of the crash but I lost them when my apartment burned down :frowning:
