My desktop Icons are changing all on their own!!

Well this is my third computer-related question for the day!!

I am running Windows ME on a PC that is part of a Novell v5 Network, and am experiencing a strange phenomenon where the wrong icons are being associated with the wrong program types (e.g MSWord files appearing with Flash icons, *.txt files with Desktop icons, etc). They change without my noticing and do not seem to have any other effect (i.e. the correct program still opens when the icon is double-clicked), but it is very disconcerting indeed. It seems to go away if I re-boot my machine, but always re-occurs. If I try and open a file from within an application, then the icons are correct, but on the desktop and within Windows Explorer they are not!!

We have had some troubles with Nimda on our Network of late, but a scan by InnoculateIT reveals no viruses.

At the moment, my Text files look like Gif’s, Excell files have an icon of a Telephone and Address book and my Zip files have an icon that has a Clock and some other figures that I cannot identify…

Any suggestions? All help much appreciated…

TweakUI will fix that. I think there’s a version that comes with ME, if not you can find it at Microsoft’s website or just about any shareware site.

Start/Settings/Control Panel/TweakUI/Repair/Rebuild Icons

Thanks for the suggestion Vera

ME doesn’t come with Tweak UI and Microsoft’s site is full of warnings not to use teh 98 version with ME…

Searching Shareware sites now.
