Thumbnails not working in Windows ME

I have a bit of a problem with my OS.
My thumbnail view no longer displays the pictures for JPG’s.(FTR, I’m referring to ordinary browsing using Windows Explorer)
I just get an icon, but no ability to see the picture anymore.
JPEG’s seem okay, but not JPG’s. BMP’s are also affected.
I’m running Windows ME on a Sony Vaio.
The other day I did two things to change the way I’ve always done things, and I suspect one or the other of them (possibly both) has messed the system up.
This thread is what got me started on the wrong road. In fairness I can’t say for sure, but until I tried to create Icons, and downloaded the program that GuanoLad suggested I never had a problem.
Those BTW were the two things I did.
Namely:
1-Created icons for the desktop (I’ve since gone back to the originals)
2-Downloaded the program in GuanoLad’s link. (I’m not blaming you GL, hope you know that.)

I’ve always opened JPG’s with imaging, and I’d like to keep doing that.
I tried folder options in the tools menu to no avail.

Does anyone know what I can do?
Thank You,
Forbin

Oh, one more thing.
A right click used to get me a “refresh thumbnail” option with any file.
It still works with the unaffected file types, just not JPG’s and BMP’s.

This problem has me  !

I’m still trying to solve this one myself, with no luck.
There is one other thing I noticed, and I think it’s new. All files in folders are now underlined. I don’t think they were that way before. This is true even when browsing for a place to save a file, or open one.
Frustrating!

are you talking about specific folders? If so, theres this “view as thumbnails option” under “view” You can also looking into folder options under tools.

I had a similar problem when I had Windows 98, after I had installed a new image program (can’t remember which one) but what fixed the problem for me was upgrading my browser to IE6. If you are already using IE6, I don’t know what to say, and I don’t know exactly how upgrading my browser solved my problem. But that is what worked for me, YMMV.

It appears to be system wide.
I am choosing to view (any given) folder in thumbnail view. What I get now are thumbnails of icons. Before, thumbnail view gave me little bitty pictures. It still does for Tiff’s and saved webpages. But for JPG’s I just get an icon in a thumbnail. JPEG’s as I mentioned are also dislaying as little pictures.
Very confusing.
I did use the “tools” menu to get “folder options”.
I selected to enable web content.
That did not solve the problem.

Ha ha!
I’m definately a “refresh monkey” for this thread.

Boscibo
I’m referring to Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer.
Maybe I don’t understand? (They’re not the same, are they?)

Yes, I know there is a difference between Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. That is why I couldn’t figure out how upgrading my browser fixed my thumbnail problem. But it did, and I was happy.

Since you still seem to be stuck, I’ll give it a shot. First off, I don’t have ME, used but really hated it and got rid of it. Because of this my information may not be very helpful.

It sounds to me like the program you installed changed the defualt viewer for JPG and Tif files. You should be able to check and maybe fix this using the File types box under the tools menu of windows explorer (at least that’s where it is with XP). Another way to get it is to press the shift button and right click a JPG. Choose the Open With option and check the box “always use this program”. Make the JPG program match the program that works correctly (TIF or BMP, I cant remember what is still working for you). I think when [b}Boscibo** fixed the similar problem he had, installing IE 6 reset the default viewer…

Good luck, and as always YMMV

Wow, I should really preview!!! I hope the answer I banged out is clear.

Eyer8 is probably right - it sounds like file associations are skew whiff. If it matters much, Windows ME sucks ass, and thumbnail view is a stupid idea - the combination of which causes stuff like this. But that’s not really gonna help you.

I use Win98, so maybe this will match, maybe it won’t.

Go to Windows Explorer. Choose Tools/Folder Options/File Types.

Find the file types in question, click on them, and see what program is configured to open them. If it is not anything you normally use to view images, then click on Edit.

In this new window should be a list of ‘actions’. One of these (the last, most likely) will be the open command, and the default software. Click on this line, and choose Edit, then choose Browse to find the program you really want to use to open the image.

Alternatively, and possibly easier, you can do what Eyer8 suggests, and first select the file that is giving you trouble, then Shift-Rightclick on it and choose “Open With…”, and then find the correct program, making sure you select “Always use this program”.

Good Luck
