My Dog is getting Cataract Surgery today: think good thoughts

My good and sweet girl KC (AKA Fuzzy Butt) just went off for cataract surgery.

She is nearly blind and only 5 years old, so I had to have it done.

Send out good thoughts for her please.

Fingers crossed (how many fingers am I holding up?) for KC!

Mojo got his cone off on Wednesday after his eye surgery and he came through like a champ. It was a scratch that wasn’t healing and they stitched his third eyelid shut so a more minor surgery but he’s so much happier now that it’s done.

We did however learn from the experience that cones and stairs are a scary combination. Also cones make an EXCELLENT weapon when mom isn’t paying sufficient attention to you.

It is so weird not having her around. I’m used to every single move I make being investigated by her. I’m used to sitting here working and suddenly feeling her breath on the back of my leg. I actually used the toilet with out a furry little dog watching me…

Post surgery, how does the dog read the eyechart?

Fingers & toes crossed for KC! Please keep us up to date on her progress.

It really IS hard when they are away, isn’t it?

No surgery today…

They had her prepped and ready to go and then discovered that they didn’t have the correct lens.

I always say that mistakes happen, that’s why there is a word for it - but I’m having trouble right now shrugging this one off. If there were a viable alternative, I’d take her elsewhere, but places that do animal eye surgery are not plentiful in this are.

Next surgery: Feb 12.

I’m so sorry that happened. Now your stress is drawn out an extra month! It sounds like the little fuzzy can at least see a little so she can get around until then?

I’m so curious, I have to ask, is it a place that just does eye surgery, or do they do other specialty stuff? I’m curious because I work at an ER/Specialty, and the specialty surgeries are strictly Monday-Friday. I’ve had to take one of my cats to the ophthalmologist and had to take time off my other job to do it. (ended up needing an eye removed) A Sunday appointment would have been a nice option, but around here the specialists don’t do weekends. Yours must be really super busy.

A woman who shared the commuter bus with me for a few years (haven’t seen her much since the route change) decided to have cataract surgery for her beloved Carolina Dog Lexi.

As far as I know the surgery was ultimately a success and she was very happy she’d had it done. She did have pet insurance to help offset the cost. Hope things work out for your fuzzbutt.

Ugh that sucks. That situation would make me very angry indeed. Would they do that to a person who needed surgery?!

I totally understand about feeling weird without your sweet girl around. I work from home and my baby Dolly is here even when she’s not in the room. If she’s not here when I’m here the whole house seems off!

Best of luck to her - next month.

Discovered wrong lens after prep, those idiots! Good luck, am hoping for the best. Keep posting about the situation, Khadaji.

Man, I answered this once… and apparently am so senile I didn’t submit it…

I too thought it odd that they have Sunday hours. As I understand it, there is the local animal hospital; in association with them (but not as a part of them) there are three animal-eye surgeons from 3 different cities, who come in 3 days a week; Friday, (some other day) and Sunday. (I am not sure which other day they come in.)

So far, they have only had available hours on a Sunday.

KC gets around the house pretty well, but has a little trouble with stairs and it isn’t too uncommon for her to bump into something. She is blind enough now that throwing the ball for her is mostly me throwing it, her “chasing” it, me going down and calling her over to find it. (That breaks my heart nearly every day, 'cause ball was one of her favoritest times of the day. Ball and eating.)

Find something with a strong smell and spray the ball with it. Maybe a chicken broth or something - not enough to soak the ball, but enough to add an odour to it. Your dog is used to looking for the ball, but there’s nothing stopping her from finding it by smell, if you can associate a particular smell to it.

I’m sorry the vet was too disorganized to do the surgery - at least they found the mistake before things went too far! I’m sure it will go well next time!

My sister’s clinic is open 7 days a week - I don’t know if cataract surgery is something they offer, though I know that an eye removal is something any vet can and does do. My local clinic offers 6 days/week service, and there is a full 24/7 animal hospital across town - that costs a fortune to use!

One of my fondest memories from school was a cataract case. A pouffy little poodle was brought in to the ophthalmology service by a crusty old farmer. Very gruff, very terse. The dog had belonged to his recently deceased wife and he had obviously promised her he would take care of her dog after she was gone, but he thought the whole production was a little ridiculous. The dog had been pretty much blind for awhile, and she was not friendly.

I got to observe/assist at the surgery, and happened to be in the ICU hours later when the dog was waking up for the first time. I could see her rousing herself slowly, and she practically had a thought balloon over her head saying, “Damn, I feel funny, what the hell happened to me?” She staggered around her cage a little, and then slowly opened her eyes. Then it was, “Whuh? Huh… oh my god, I can SEE again! I can see see see see! Woohoo! I can see!”

It was one of the most amazing things, her emotions and thoughts so evident in her body language.
She turned into a very sweet dog the next couple of days during her recovery, and when the crusty old farmer came to take her home, his face underwent a similar if more subtle transformation when he saw how active and happy she was. He had a tear in his eye, and I could only guess about how it might connect him to his memories of his wife. I’m a little verklempt remembering it 15 years later.

I hope your dog’s surgery goes well.

Thanks for the great story. I am so anxious to see her get her sight back. She hasn’t been blind long, but long enough…

Poor puplet! She’s too young to be going blind :frowning:

I feel like they should be called dogaracts instead of cataracts, though, given the circumstances.

So tomorrow’s the big day… They rescheduled the reschedule - which doesn’t leave me with a lot of confidence in their administration skills. Hopefully the surgeon is much much better than their service has been.

Think good thoughts!

::giving a thumbs-up::

Good luck to pupster, and to your nerves!

I’ll send up a prayer for her tonight. I’m thinking I’d be a wreck if it was my Nathan!

Well she’s under the knife now. They said that she’d go under between 1:30 and 2:00 and that they would call me, so by now I was starting to get a little anxious.
