2 weeks ago my left eye started twitching. More specifically, the muscles in my upper lid spontaneously go into spasms dozens of times a day. It’s very noticeable and bothersome.
Anyone have this problem, and if so, did you do anything that seemed to help?
Awww, man. I’ve had this. In fact, the last time, I had it for a couple of MONTHS. Everybody I talked to seemed to think that it was sleep defecit related, but it wouldn’t go away even when I was sleeping enough. I was beginning to think I had a brain tumor, but it eventually just sort of went away. I’m really interested in the replies to this thread, because if that bastard twitch ever comes back, I want to be able to eradicate it. With prejudice.
I’ve also experienced this. It happened to occur one time when I was seeing a doctor about another matter so I asked about it. She told me it was stress related. I don’t have any recommendations - I just live with it.
Ah yes…and truly annoying as people assume you are batshit and expect you to eat bugs and mutter about aliens.
I had it happen about two years ago and at night, I would hold my eyelid open with one hand while watching television or reading.
It seemed to help, but then again, it might have been because I was getting all that protein from the bugs and had taken off the tin foil hat off so the aliens could stop it.
I’ve had a lot of muscle twitches as a result of anxiety. Cutting back on caffeine helped a lot, as did daily stretching exercise. Unfortunately, the eye twitch is the last to go away and the first to resume. In fact, there’s a little muscle jumping under my left eye even as we speak. It’s not an immediate cure, but the best thing to do is to look at the amount of stress in your life and try to fix it, even if the best you can do is to lower your stimulant intake and keep your muscles stretched and relaxed. I have ever taken Benadryl when a really bad twitchy fit kept my leg bouncing and kicking for an hour, but I’m not a doctor, so don’t take my word for it.
I work in the ophthalmology department of a medical center, and whenever one of the staff has mentioned eyelid twitching, the immediate reply has been “stress.” IANAD/N; if this concerns you, you should probably see a doctor, blah blah blah.
Funny you should bring this up, I have been having eye twitching over the past week and I am *off coffee and really into juicing & eating really good right now. I really like it too and I’m not a dieter at all.
The stress is my life is probably at a 2 or 3 out of 10 and I am not on any meds.
The only thing I can think of, keeping my Eat Green/Drink your veggies phase in mind is maybe because of juicing a couple meals a day and no junk food crap, maybe I am lacking in a vitamin in a specific area.
I agree with the stress diagnosis (I don’t know about yours, Shirley. Maybe you’re just special. ) Try meditation and/or conscious relaxation - see, our North American society puts a very low priority on relaxation, and a lot of people (myself included) don’t actually know how to relax. Once your body learns how to relax, it is a wonderful thing - I don’t think I have ever slept better.
I will hasten to add that there are almost certainly other things that can cause eye twitching, just that this was overwhelmingly mentioned immediately when the ailment was brought up. If it really starts to be a pain, see a doctor.
Oh yeah - right around the Christmas period this past year, my left eye’s lower eyelid started jumping like a herring on a griddle. Stuck around for a month and a half. Went away for several weeks, came back for a week.
I’ve had a jumpy muscle under my left eye for almost a week now. It showed up a week ago tomorrow at my dad’s 60th birthday party. I definitely think it’s stress related. There’s been a lot of crap at work lately that’s stressing me out. I’d really like it to go away though.
This isn’t medical advice (of course) but I’ve heard that some cramps and twitches are related to a potassium deficiency. This is pure hearsay, okay? However, bananas are high in potassium, as well as some other foods. When I have cramping or twitches I try to eat a couple of bananas and they seem to go away. Anyway, can’t hurt to eat more fruit. YMMV.
I get twitchy eyelids due to anxiety/stress, or too tired, often without realizing I am anxious/stressed or tired. I have some meds which help, but since I am special I won’t make pharmaceutical recommendations!
I am off caffeine - except for the occasional cup of black tea or a diet soda. It’s imperative to wean oneself slowly in order to avoid the horrible headache.
I heard also that it is a muscle spasm due to rubbing your eyes too much. I don’t know if there’s anything to back that up or not, but when hay fever season cmes around my eyes will itch then twitch.
