My father had a heart attack

I was able to phone my dad today, and he’s in good spirits, all things considered. He’s scheduled for a triple bypass this Tuesday, so at least it’s gonna be over with soon. Thanks to everyone for your replies, both on the board and in email. It seems that his heart sustained very little damage, he’s just got clogged arteries. So I think that he’ll come out of this all right, except, of course, that my mother will nag him even more about his diet.

Glad to know he’s doing okay, Lynn. I’m not clear on the risks of such a procedure, but I wish all of you-- your father, your family, and his doctors-- all of my best on Tuesday.

Please let us know how your dad is doing, Lynn. My best wishes to you.

I hope all went well today.

What the…

Sorry 'bout that double post.

Lynn, I missed this thread at first, but best wishes for you and your father. My dad had bypass surgery done in 1969, when it was still an experimental procedure. One of the most important things I can tell you from his experience is, don’t let your dad think that having the bypass means he’s got a new heart and can go back to his old bad habits–Dad tried that and landed back in the hospital seven years later with another heart attack. If he watches his diet and exercises (with his doctor’s blessing, of course), he’ll be around a good many more years. Good luck, and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Lynn: I don’t know how I missed this thread either, but you and your dad have my best wishes! Hope all goes well for him.

I didnt say anything before because I don’t like to be reminded that my father went through this too but it was a one way street for him. Hope your dad does well Lynn.

Lynn, I just found this thread and wanted to let you know that good thoughts and prayers for you and your dad are heading for you.

Having been through this with my father and grandfather I can understand how you feel.

Thank you all. He had the surgery yesterday, came through it fine. The docs decided to go ahead and do a quadruple bypass instead of a triple while they had him in there. Actually, he’s been taking care of himself LATELY, but when he was younger he did smoke and make poor food choices. He quit smoking on the day that the Surgeon General came out with the cigarette report…I’m really glad now, as I’m sure he wouldn’t be here if he’d kept on smoking.

Lynn

relieved to hear all is well. Best to you and your entire family.

Lynn, my best friend’s dad had a triple this summer and he’s doing Just Fine - he runs the family business and has long-since resumed his normal 12-hour days. He, too, has taken good care of himself - changed his diet radically after an angioplasty 10 years ago. I’m sure it helped with his recovery, and it sounds as if your father has been the same.

Best wishes. These first couple of weeks can be a bit rough, but it’s all in a good cause. Before modern surgery, the men in my friend’s family all dropped at about 50. According to the docs, there’s no reason his dad shouldn’t make it to 80. That’s a lot of life-living, grandchildren-having, retirement-travelling years!

Your latest news is wonderful, Lynn! Best wishes for his full and speedy recovery.

Best wishes, Lynn. My mom’s husband had a triple bypass in February, and he is doing fine.

My thoughts are with you.

He’s already changed his lifestyle and now he has come through surgery OK? That sounds great! Best wishes.

Hopefully this will take care of things for some time to come, and he will now enjoy better health.

I hope your father gets well soon.

Excellent news. Maybe the family can all get together and get him a treadmill or something for Christmas to help with his rehabilitation.

You’ll sure have something to celebrate this year!

Yes, he did make it to the hospital in time. Which would mean to me that he had someone with him that knew what to do. It might be a nice time to mention what someone should do if they are with someone who has or is appearing to have, a heart attack. You won’t, of course, be getting that medical info from me…
