Lib, which version of Imitation of Life?
…gotta add in Fight Club.
I keep hitting the Submit button too soon.
Something I noticed about my list is that there is a definite Character Driven/Science Fiction vein in there. Also, none of the actors in any of my favorite movies are my overall favorite actors. I hate Ed Harris, but love him in The Abyss. I don’t like Gabriel Byrne, but love him in Miller’s Crossing. I don’t like Alec Baldwin, but love him in Hunt For Red October.
Hmmmm. Go figure.
1. The Shawshank Redemption
2. To Sir With Love
3. Preditor
4. The Abyss
5. An American President
El Kabong’s list and mine would be identical except I’d substitute Raising Arizona for The Big Lebowski.
The Royal Tenenbaums
American Beauty
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Monty Python & The Holy Grail
Unbreakable
-
Dogma
-
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
-
The Lion King
-
Where the Heart Is
-
American History X
There’s five although there are many others I love.
Ooh, can I play! Just 5 though, that seems a little mean.
O.K, here goes, in no particular order:
Bladerunner
Rear Window
Amelie
Mystery Men
Dawn of the Dead
What, no room for His Girl Friday, Spinal Tap, Monthy Python and the Holy Grail, Crouching Tiger…, Adventures of Picasso, Donnie Darko…etc, etc.
Still, a pleasantly varied list I feel.
O.K, my boyfriend, who is a MAJOR film geek, has asked to have his list included too
Casablanca
North by North West
Viridiana
Vertigo
The Big Sleep
and he says, “what, no room for…!” to, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Wild Bunch, Nosferatu, M, Yojimbo, Modern Times, Dr Strangelove and Belle de Jour.
Hmmm, no films in common, may have to work on that…
Gotta get my high five in.
Sunset Boulevard
Fellowship of the Ring
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Quiet Man
The Big Lebowski
Alphabetically:
Animal House
Casablanca
Fargo
Goodfellas
Wizard of Oz
Anyone keeping track of multiple mentions? A couple of frontrunners seem to be emerging.
- Pulp Fiction
- High Fidelity
- All the President’s Men
- Mallrats
- The Matrix
Honorable mentions to:
Reservoir Dogs
Dogma
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Life of Brian
Full Metal Jacket
Snatch
UHF
Pfft, 5 movies. Yeah, right.
Darn you proudest monkey
(methinks there’s a story behing that name)
for appealing to my incurably anal side. here’s the scores as I see em (not counting those naughty people who, like me, just couldn’t resist amending their list or adding more- first five is what counts people!)
Casablanca- 4 votes
Miller’s Crossing, The Abyss, American History X, Goodfellas, The Big Lebowski- 3 votes
Night of the Hunter, Raising Arizona, Moty Python and the Holy Grail, Vertigo, Seven Samurai, 2001, The Shawshank Redemption, Rushmore, To Have and to Have Not, Fargo, Bridget Jones Diary, Spider Man, The Third Man, The Maltese Falcon, Chinatown, Dawn of the Dead- 2 votes
Hm, some intersting front runners so far. However, there’s no doubt of the favourite directors so far- The Coens have it by a clear mile…
1)High Fidelity
2)Rushmore
3)Office Space
4)The Big Lebowski
5)Raising Arizona
Honorable mentions to Best in Show, This is Spinal Tap, Memento, Magnolia, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Bottle Rocket, Citizen Kane
Crap! I forgot The Shawshank Redemption!
Just add that to honorable mentions, I guess…
- The Big Lebowski
- Fargo
- Snatch
- One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
- The Man Who Wasn’t There.
Yeah, I’m a Coen Brothers fan, too. Who the hell isn’t?
I’ll stick some honourable mentions in later.
If we’re talking movies you can watch over and over (as opposed to objectively the best films wrt filmaking):

So I Married an Axe Murderer
If we’re talking the movies I’ve seen that I think are the best made:
Jaws
Casablanca
Unforgiven
Saving Private Ryan
Raiders of the Lost Ark
me too, me too!
Harold & Maude
Babette’s Feast
The Ballad of Narayama
A Man For All Seasons
The Lion In Winter
only five, damn.
Can I count all of the LOTR movies as one? If so, then my list would be (in no particular order)
LOTR
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Dances With Wolves
The Right Stuff
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The movies I watch over and over, not necessarily the one I think are the best:
Princess Bride

Royal Tennenbaums
Topsy Turvy
Best In Show
No particular order:
Unforgiven
Lone Star
Stalag 17
Cannibal: the Musical
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
My favorite five, in order:
- Faraway, So Close!
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Love Letter (1995 Japanese Movie ) - This one just moved up one slot after I watched it again last week, but I doubt it’ll go higher.
- Blade Runner (theatrical release)
- Ran
