What's you Coen Brothers "order"?

Some people really seem to hate some of what other people love when it comes to these guys. How do you order the Coen brothers movies?

Mine, without exposition…

  1. Big Leb.
  2. Fargo
  3. Rais Ariz
  4. Hudsuck
  5. Blood Simple
  6. Miller’s Crossing
  7. I.C.
  8. Man who wasn’t…
  9. Fink
  10. O Brother

[9 & 10 I really didn’t like. 8, I could take it or leave it]

1 Fargo
2 Miller’s Crossing
3 Blood Simple
4 Raising Arizona
5 Barton Fink
6 Hudsucker Proxy
7 O Brother
8 Big Lebowski
9 Man Who Wasn’t There
10 Intolerable Cruelty

Hard to pick a fav from 1, 2, and 3. If I posted this a hour ago the order might have been different, if I were to post this an hour from now it might be different again.

4 thru 10 are pretty much locked in. I haven’t seen “Man Who Wasn’t There” since I saw it in the Theatre. I remember liking it while I was watching it but it didn’t leave an impression on me. If I were to watch it again I might have stronger feelings either “for” or “against” (probably “for”).

Intolerable Cruelty, I didn’t like at all.

1 Raising Arizona
2 O Brother
3 Hudsucker Proxy
4 Barton Fink
5 Fargo
6 Blood Simple
523 Big Lebowski

Think that sums it up well

  1. Fargo
  2. O Brother
  3. Rais Ariz
  4. Hudsucker Proxy
  5. Intolerable Cruelty
  6. Blood Simple
  7. Fink

Haven’t seen…
Big Lebowski
Miller’s Crossing
Man Who Wasn’t There

I seem to enjoy the less-darker comedies more than the darker ones, except Fargo. Could also be related to how recently I’ve seen them… I haven’t seen Blood Simple in 10 years and I haven’t seen Barton Fink since it was in the theaters.

Uh, just pretend I know how to count when you read my post above.

1 Big Lebowski
2 Miller’s Crossing
3 Raising Arizona
4 Hudsucker Proxy
5 Fargo
6 O Brother
7 Barton Fink
8 Blood Simple
9 Man Who Wasn’t There

I haven’t yet seen Intolerable Cruelty.

I like #9 about as much as I like #5.

Isn’t the new Tom Hanks films, Ladykillers, a Coen flick?

  1. Miller’s Crossing
  2. Fargo
  3. O Brother Where Art Thou
  4. Blood Simple
  5. Raising Arizona
  6. Man Who Wasn’t There
  7. Barton Fink
  8. Hudsucker Proxy

Haven’t seen Lebowski or I.C.

  1. Barton Fink
  2. Millers Crossing
  3. O Brother Where Art Thou
  4. Fargo
  5. Blood Simple
  6. Big Lebowski
  7. Raising Arizona
  8. The Man Who Wasn’t There
  9. Intolerable Cruelty
  10. Hudsucker Proxy

I pretty much like all Coen Bros movies, enough so that it’s hard for me to rank them. What i do know, however, that the Big Lebowski is my favorite, by far. Perhaps top 3 on my all-time list. I highly recommend to those posters who have not seen.

Ladykillers is (re)written and directed by the Coen Bros.

It was originally a 1955 movie with Alec Guinness.

I haven’t seen it but I know some company released a lot of his early stuff on DVD last year including that one.

It’s supposed to be funny. I don’t know how dated it is.

Here’s mine.

  1. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
  2. The Big Lebowski
  3. Raising Arizona
  4. The Hudsucker Proxy
  5. Miller’s Crossing
  6. Barton Fink
  7. Fargo

The rest I haven’t seen, but I’m anticipating Intolerable Cruelty in the mail via Netflix today, so this list could change by tomorrow.

Mine with minor exposition…

  1. O Brother- sentimental favorite
  2. Fargo- the masterpiece
  3. Raising Arizona- funniest and sunniest
  4. Barton Fink- deepest
  5. Hudsucker Proxy- whackiest
  6. Blood Simple- darkest/noir classic
  7. Miller’s Crossing- kinda muddled, admit have to watch it again
  8. Man Who Wasn’t There- technical marvel, little glum for the C’s
  9. Big Lebowski- fucking mess

Yet to see Intolerable Cruelty.

  1. Big Lebowski
  2. Fargo
  3. Raising Arizona
  4. Hudsucker Proxy
  5. O Brother Where Art Thou
  6. Barton Fink
  7. Man Who Wasn’t There
  8. Blood Simple
  9. Millers Crossing

Haven’t seen Intolerable Cruelty yet.

  1. O Brother, Where Art Thou
  2. The Hudsucker Proxy
  3. Fargo
  4. The Big Lebowski
  5. Raising Arizona
  6. Intolerable Cruelty
  7. The Man Who Wasn’t There
  8. Blood Simple
Barton Fink I haven’t been able to sit through, and I’ve never seen Miller’s Crossing. TMWWT and Blood Simple are good movies, but honestly I’d rather watch IC because it’s funnier. IC isn’t nearly as good as most of their movies, but a bad Coen Brothers movie is still better than 90% of what’s out there.

Have not yet seen Miller’s Crossing, Intolerable Cruelty, and The Man Who Wasn’t There, so that puts my list down to seven items:

Blood Simple
Big Lewbowski
O Brother
Raising Arizona
and Hudsucker are pretty neck-to-neck for me…
Barton Fink and Fargo–I’ve only seen each of these once, so I have a hard time really saying much about them. I know I didn’t like Fargo nearly as much as I expected to.

Of those I’ve seen:

  1. Fargo – one of the three best movies of the 90s.
  2. O Brother, Where Art Thou! (I knew it would be great as soon as I heard the title – Preston Sturges forever!)
  3. Raising Arizona
  4. The Man who Wasn’t There
  5. The Hudsucker Proxy
  6. The Big Lebowski (the only one I didn’t like. It did nothing and went nowhere).
  1. Fargo (1996)
  2. Miller’s Crossing (1990)
  3. The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001)
  4. Blood Simple (1984)

Then the rest.

Crikey, this is hard.

  1. O Brother
  2. Miller’s Crossing
  3. Intolerable Cruelty
  4. Fargo (I originally had this higher – I may just have seen it too many times)
  5. Raising Arizona
  6. Hudsucker
  7. Big Lebowski
  8. Man Who Wasn’t There

I haven’t seen Blood Simple or Barton Fink. 3-5 and 7 & 8 are probably more like ties.

  1. The Big Lebowski - also, dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature.
  2. Miller’s Crossing
  3. Fargo
  4. Raising Arizona
  5. O Brother Where Art Thou - what RealityChuck said
  6. The Hudsucker Proxy
  7. Blood Simple
  8. The Man Who Wasn’t There
  9. Barton Fink

I hated their last effort so much that I can’t even put it on my list. At least 5 of the above make my top 100; IC isn’t in my top 1000.

I came late to the whole Coen brothers’ phenomenon, so I haven’t seen a couple of their earlier movies. Of the ones I have seen:

  1. The Big Lebowski
  2. Fargo
  3. The Man Who Wasn’t There
  4. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
  5. The Hudsucker Proxy

Will have to rent Raising Arizona and Miller’s Crossing soon, perhaps this weekend.
