I’ve found out about lots of great products on this website, so it’s only fair that I make a recommendation. My new favorite mascara is Max Factor’s Lash Perfection. It’s in black, the non waterproof version, and the brush is to die for. IT ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT LET THE MASCARA CLUMP, EVER. I always used to wonder why I couldn’t get my eyelashes to look like the model’s, well now I can. After I curl my lashes, I pull out the brush and go to town. One coat for a subtle look, two coats for most office looks, and three coats looks as if I’m wearing false eyelashes. The brush is made out of silicone and it just does a fabulous job.
Now, if only I could apply liquid eyeliner well, I’d be a happy woman.
Hmmm - thanks for the recommendation. I can NEVER find a mascara that I like.
Dumb question medstar - do you apply it just from underneath or are you also so well-coordinated that you can apply it on the TOP of your upper lashes too? Know what I mean? Whenever I try, (a) it clumps no matter what kind I use, and (b) I end up getting it under my eyebrows when I open my eyes.
Hmm, I’ve never heard of trying to apply mascara to the tops of the lashes. That seems kind of counter-intuitive, if what you want to do is curl them away from the eye.
I don’t bother putting mascara on the bottom lashes, either. It gets all smudgy.
Thanks for the recommendation, medstar. I’ve always liked L’Oreal mascaras, and I usually use FeatherLash for day, but I recently bought some Lash Architect, and I really don’t like it. Clumpy, and I feel like it does *less * in terms of lengthening and thickening than the FeatherLash, which is supposedly a more “natural” look.
I never bother with my lower lashes, either - too much hassle. Some local brands came out with a tiny mascara brush specifically for lower lashes, but I think I’ll be okay without it.
My current favorite is Lancome’s Hypnose. Some of my friends says it flakes, but I haven’t had any problems with it. I also liked YSL’s Faux Cils, but it was too heavy for everyday use (plus my eyelashes kept drooping under the weight).
Thanks for the tip, medstar. As I was saying in another thread, I loves me some makeup! Here’s my tip for you: Smashbox cream eyeliner. It. Is. The. Bomb. Get a skinny little brush to put it on with - the texture’s perfect, it goes on smooth & creamy with no harsh lines and then dries so it doesn’t smudge, but it stays sof, not flakey. I wear it everyday. I like black best, but they make lots of other wicked cool colors, too. Sephora usually has it.
I stopped doing my lower lashes regularly awhile ago, but if you use one of those flat, stiff eyeliner brushes (that never work for eyeliner IMHO), dip it into your mascara and dab on your lower lashes, things get a lot less messy and it looks very natural.
That’s because you are gifted with fabulously long lashes! Let it dry before you open your eyes all the way. Or you can look into getting them dyed. Though I wouldn’t recommend that.
I love L’oreal Voluminous mascara, but lately my eyes have been itching. Does anyone use Almay? Does it help?
Bad Gal Lash by Benefit is very good for those of us who’s lashes are long but fine. Plumps them up a treat.
Someone gave me a tip the other day for applying liquid eyeliner that seems to work a treat. Put a dot of it in the middle of your lash line. Then go from the dot to the outer corner of youtr eye, then from the dot to the inner corner of your eye. It’s a lot easier than trying to do it in one stroke.
re: application of liquid eyeliner - I use MAC’s Fluidline, and absolutely love it. It’s much easier to apply (they come in little pots, like cream e/s but more solid) and the lines are not as harsh as liquid eyeliner tends to be. They don’t smudge as much as liquid does, either.
I thank you as well, medstar for the tip. Now I have a question for you and anyone else who wants to chine in. What do you think of lash stain(I think that’s what it’s called).? Ya know, the stuff that supposed to last three days or something. Does that mean that if one was to not wash her face for three days, her lashes will still be fabulous? I guess I don’t see the advantage of three day mascara, seeing as that I wash my face twice a day EVERY day. Enlighten me, gals!
Oh, and re putting mascara on the bottom lashes, I use one of the aforementioned eyeliner brushes (the stiff angles ones) to put some shadow on the base of the lashes and then hold the mascara wand vertically and lightly swish them once from the inner to the outer corner. The shadow seems to give the mascara something to cling to, and the swishing motion allows only a very little bit of mascara to get on the lashes, thus eliminating smudgage.
For the redheads out there, Max Factor 2000 Calorie is pretty much the only auburn mascara out there besides the pricey high end stuff. Black and even brown are way too harsh for my coloring.
Thanks but god no, my lashes are so short and skimpy it’s ridiculous. But I have tried putting on the tops of my lashes because on makeover shows etc it seems that’s the way the makeup artists do it. They do the top and then underneath. Maybe my lashes are just too skimpy to hold all of that goop.
I used to love that mascara too but found it too clumpy lately. I have tried a couple of Almay’s mascaras because my eyes can get sensitive too, but I wasn’t a huge fan. Although of the two I tried, the one in the purpley shiney tube (can’t remember the name) was nicer.
I had my eyelashes dyed once but my eyes had a bad reaction to the dye (maybe the odour or something?) and watered for about two days straight! So not only did it hurt, the ‘tears’ washed all of the dye off. There are apparently milder vegetable-based dyes but I haven’t been brave enough to try again.
Featherlash used to come in Auburn. I’ve finally given up on trying to find Auburn mascara. And just about done the same on Brown.
Actually, I just discovered Revlon’s Fabulash, and I’m pretty happy with it. Especially since Costco has been selling 3-packs for $9.99! It’s a little thick, but not really clumpy, and it doesn’t flake off after several hours the way a lot do on me.
I’ve never experienced problems with the lower lashes. I wonder if it’s because mine are quite long.
I think I will look into that Smashbox cream eyeliner that jellyblue mentioned. I have way more trouble with eyeliner than mascara. The pencils are easier to apply, but harder to wash off gently. The liquids - harder to apply, don’t work so well on the lower lid if you’re inclined to watery eyes from allergies, or if you live where it rains a lot.
On me, it looks more finished. First swipe is the tops of the upper lashes, then the bottom of the upper lashes. (The other way with the bottom lashes.) They’ll curl no matter what - mascara is for making my eyes show up at all. (If I wear lipstick with nothing on my eyes, my eyes disappear entirely. All that can be seen are giant, collagen-injection-gone-wrong, really, really huge lips.)
medstar, thanks for the recommendation. I’ve just started wearing makeup again (most of the time), and I haven’t been able to come up with a good non-clumping black mascara (I finally gave up great lash. It wasn’t so great). I do, however, really like Jane clear curling mascara for my lower lashes. Not enough color for the upper ones - but good for daytime use.
Stainz, I just apply it from underneath. Although my lashes are short, I’m not looking for a garish look, just something that will frame my eyes at work. I curl my eyelashes and then apply one coat to the underside of both top sets of eyelashes. I go over at least three times to really get each lash coated. As far as my lower lashes are concerned, I wait until the brush is almost dry. Then, I wipe the tip off on a tissue. With what little mascara is left, I “windshield wipe” my lashes. While there’s not as much coverage as the top lashes get, I think it’s a more natural look than gunking up the top lashes and leaving the bottom lashes bare. I think that’s a stark, unfinished look.
Jellyblue, thanks for the smashbox cream eyeliner hint. I’m so bad at applying eyeliner, I usually just stroke on dark eyeshadow and smoke it out.
Oh, I’ve got another tip on applying mascara. I use my left hand to apply mascara to my left eye and my right hand to apply to my right eye. After I stroke each eyelash a couple of times, I reach over to the opposite eye and coat the extreme outer lashes. I find that I get a better angle to really concentrate on the out lashes if I do that. Hope that helps.
