I’m a 10 and I’m 5’7", and, aside from some really annoying stores (like Pacific Suncoast), I’ve never had a problem finding cute shoes in my size. My mom used to insist I needed wide width, but I haven’t bought a pair of wides in absolutely years, and all my shoes have fit great. I think I could probably wear a 9 1/2, but they simply don’t make enough shoes in that size.
I’ve never understood the tendency of some people to get blisters from ill-fitting shoes. The only time that’s happened to me was the one time I wore dress shoes without breaking them in first, and ended up having to walk all over Chicago in them, and, even then, it was only my heel.
I tend to wear guys-type shoes, although I find that woman’s Sketchers fit very nicely. I also got a great pair from Hot Topic–not funky, mind you, just nice, flat sneakers in red and black suede–that fit pretty well, although those are in some guy’s size because the women’s ones had a more pinkish red that I didn’t really like very much.
I wore 9’s for a long time, but my feet, in their infinite wisdom, decided to expand to 10 in the past couple of years. I don’t have too much trouble finding nice shoes. Dr. Martens, 9West, Franco Sarto, etc. are all pretty good. Sometimes it takes a while to suck it up and admit when your feet have ballooned to 10, though.
Now, you aren’t gonna find ordinary sneakers and whatnot here, and a lot of them are, shall we say, fancy. But they have a nice standard pump with 4" heel up to size 17, and a lot of fuzzy boots. They might be a bit wild for you, but larger shoes are out there. Maybe these can help.
I’m a guy, so maybe it’s different for me, but I wear a size 14, and only rarely do I have trouble finding shoes/boots that fit.
Incidentally, this reminds of Richard Jeni’s Platypus Man sketch where he talks about the female-shoe-shopping experience from the POV of the young salesman.
I’ve had no significant trouble finding decent shoes for my 11 wide feet. I mostly shop at Payless. I know some places, like Target, doesn’t stock anything larger than a 10.
One thing I have found interesting is that my shoe size has dropped from a 12 to an 11 – but the 12s I bought two, three years ago still fit, so it’s not my foot size that’s changed. Not that I’m annoyed: the selection in 11 is much better than that in 12.
One thing I’ve learned: my feet look smaller if I wear either open-toed shoes, or ridiculously chunky platform styles. Of course, the latter makes me even taller than the 5’11.5" I already am, not that this bothers me much.
I’m a 14D (though I can squeeze into size 13 hiking boots as they tend to be larger anyway) and I’ve never had much luck finding shoes to fit. It was just a few years ago that I was able to even find socks that fit that weren’t white sport socks.
I usually buy my shoes from Payless or Walmart… at least the shoes I have around currently (the newest ones being about a year old the oldest being strangely enough a good 8 years old and still fit considering I was growing when they were bought)
I have long since given up on finding a decent dress shoe and stick mainly to some lovely pairs of black ankle boots that are dressy enough to pass muster and are amazingly comfortable. Even the ones with the one inch heel.
Oh btw I’m 6’1 and my shoes generally fall in the 10/11W range thanks to the joy of genetics I recieved wide feet along with high arches, which make shoe shopping more of a hell than the wideness does. Fortunately though despite some gimping in the toes due to breaking them at various times I have been assured by my room-mates (all males) that they are well proportioned and far from ugly.
This all reminds me. My Teva’s are about to give up the ghost… I’ve had them a good 8/9 years and the soles are getting fairly thin. I’ll also have to pick up sneakers because in a few months I doubt I’ll be wanting, or really able, to bend down to tie laces on my ankle boots.
I would probably have responded with a “No, your mouth is too big.” I would then proceed to take the shoes that are too small and make him eat them. I hate rude retailers.
I,too, dread shopping for dress shoes. For casual wear, I buy men’s sandals or sneakers. I found a pair of black patent leather low heeled pumps at DSW in size 11 once. I’d like to know, of the posters who mentioned Massey’s, do you have to send back a lot of shoes that don’t fit? I usually need to try on 5-6 pairs to find a pair that fits.
Does anyone else have a problem with having to walk down flights of stairs? I either have to turn my feet sideways or deal with half of my foot on the stair.
Oh yeah. If I’m not careful I almost fall down the stairs a lot… or up them. I used to do that at school all the time. Luckily I never broke my neck, but once I fell down about 5 stairs and I was in the middle of the staircase… thank goodness for the platform halfway down! Otherwise I would have done more damage then a slightly twisted ankle and bruised shin!
I hope I’m not too late to help - not sure what the total retail picture is in Soviet Canuckistan, but p’raps you’d like some of the new, very attractive Birkenstocks coming out, in a line called Footprints Architect. I didn’t know about them 'til a few Dopers and I went to the Design Triennial (at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum) here in NY - they’re amazing looking, and still in the comfy Birkenstock form factor. Looks like you can order them online, too, if you know your Birk size.
Oxy, 10.5 EEEE with narrow ankles.
(Glad someone got to the Fats Waller before I did!)
I’ve got a strangely narrow, sized 13 foot. I sometimes shop smaller sizes just to be able to lace tighter.
I had an old college friend that sold shoes for a living. He used to claim that all the women walked in to his store claiming to be a size 8. That’s it. He may measure them at a 9 or 10 but they’d insist on on buying the 8 and stuffing them tightly on their feet.
A generalization to be sure. I’ve never minded having big feet & don’t mind searching the for 13’s.
Dragonblink mentioned the Lands End all weather mocs. Which was what I was thinking when talking about shoes from them; I’ve got both their all weather mocs and all weather chelsea boots, and love them. They have been 100% comfortable from day one. And they come in wide, which is great.
I then discovered, to my surprise and only upon Papa Tiger’s insistence that I look, that Wal-Mart now carries all-weather mocs that are IDENTICAL to the Lands End ones except for the sole tread. For 1/3 the price. I got a pair to test them out, and they’ve held up just as well. Shocked the shit out of me, I can assure you, never before having seen shoes from Wal-Mart that were anything other than pure crapola.
Lane Bryant and Roaman’s catalogues have shoes. Some are well known brands with comparable prices, some are “house brands” that are adequate quality but inexpensive.
Boots to fit the wide of foot and calf, usually at least one pair without High Heels of Horror.
