My first [pedantic and mild] punctuation rant.

(I think)
My ‘boss’ (supervisor who thinks he’s the boss) puts a ’ in the weirdest places. like put’s or chair’s not “the chair’s colour” but “I painted all the chair’s.”

Also when people say something like " question for for gay men?" (no disrespect meant to the OP over in MPSIMS or wherever it is)

You are basically asking “Is this a question for gay men?” The last question mark is not needed, you are not asking a question, you are making a statement “I have a question for gay men” is not a question.

Lobsang, as rant’s go, that was utterly pathetic. People open the thread for more vitriol?

Somewhat unrelatedly, I’ve never understood whether or not it’s correct to put a sentence by itself into brackets.

(Like this).

Where was I?
Yes. Misuse of apostrophe’s. I feel your pain.

The question mark isn’t the only thing that’s not needed.

My dear Lobsang, I’m sorry to say that your rant is on the same subject, but pallid, in comparison to my recent one on the same subject. So nya nya nyaaa.

How the fuck did that happen? I didn’t hit “submit” on the first unedited post. Weird.

Lobsang, your boss appears to be from the school of “thought” (well-meaning, but incorrect, that it is) that says you must put an apostrophe before the S in a plural noun. This is actually, IIRC, a holdover from a time long ago, but from everything I have read on the subject the correct use now is no apostrophe. An apostrophe is to be used only to show possession except in the cases of some pronouns, in which case the apostrophe is used as in contractions. It’s a decently difficult rule to learn/follow, and one which many of our esteemed members get wrong from time to time.

Don’t even get me started on the “Ooh, I have more than four words in a row. Gotta add a comma.” mindset. Oooh, that grates on me.

um…
ahh never mind -

[sub]I did warn. it said ‘mild’ in the title[/sub]

Lob, I think Loneraven’s post was in jest:)

Grammar rants have officially jumped the shark.

Yeah. I knew it was. Mine was too. Loneraven I did get your post.
I don’t think I quite have the motivation to inject any goats or felching into my OP like I did for the too much mayonaise rant.

Damn hamsters working overtime again.

OH SHIT! a grammar rant!

Gimme a lawn chair and some popcorn, lets watch the pencils fly! It must be a hard job for your boss, ya know, being the head of the english department.

what? he’s not? Then why do you give a shit?

And that “question for a gay man?” thing is just force of habit. Don’t read into it too much. I’m sure if people were writting essays and school papers on this board they would care more about grammar.

You gotta realize grammar is not on the forefront of everyones mind. Correcting peoples spelling or grammar mistakes is pointless. As long as the point gets across, leave it alone.

They would care more, for sure. But would that show in their writing?

To be quite honest - I don’t.

I just like the oportunity for something to rant about,

I do realize that. it is only at the forefront of my mind because I am a perfectionist. And even then I am not [even close to] the true gramar prefects here.

Even though I’m from Texas, I didn’t realize that I should write “y’all” instead of “ya’ll” until I read it on the STMB.

Good evening to Y’ALL and happy June 1rst. In Dallas, we have 90 degree temperatures and JUNE BUGS, which I hate. They buzz and hop and fly and I.Hate.Them.

Understood. But when someone rants about grammar I need to comment. Cuz’ I need something to rant about.

huh… Not sure what you are trying to say.

umm, yea I guess it would show in thier writing. That doesn’t negate the fact that the vast majority of us don’t care.

I have a question? When were plurals ever formed with apostrophes?

But it’s really not difficult if you just think about what you are doing. The apostrophe is used for possessives and for contractions, but NOT for plurals. What’s difficult about it?
