[My friend was killed in the] Oregon community college shooting [edited title]

Here’s the 4chan thread that the shooter started warning he was going to do it.

Why would any average 21-year old citizen need one of these?

Is this one ok?

This is the second goofiest argument the pro-gun side has.

Our economy wouldn’t exist without cars. They easily save or create conditions where millions of people prosper and have better existences.

Private ownership of guns is a hobby, or lets mountain folk eat Elk meat all winter. Not the same thing.

Not that I’m against private ownership of guns, but the idea that it’s the same thing as car ownership is drivel.

No I’m not. Jared Lougner was the one who shot U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and killed 6 people. His parents would disable his car to keep him home and had taken his guns away.

It’s your world too. People are cowards. And if they do act, they will, I contend, likely do something counter productive often.

Even gun owners.

Mass murderers have used many different objects and devices as weapons in order to commit mass murder.

You chose to blame inanimate firearms and knives. What will you attempt to ban next, automobiles? Is there any chance you might actually consider dealing with the actual murderer(s)?

By the way, UCC is NOT a Gun Free Zone:

We have had, since Jan 1, 2015, a mass shooting (4+ victims, including shooter) everyday (on average). Most of these DON’T make the national news, because they are PRIVATE killings (as in family members, or households).

Gun violence in America, in 17 maps and charts.

Hey, go ahead and pull out your .45. You’ve just made yourself the first target. What’s the math again?

There’s no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. Either way. It’s either go back to the Wild West, or try to magically make 400,000,000 guns disappear, or stick with the status quo.

The status quo it will be. And I’m not necessarily a heavy anti-gun guy. I quite enjoy firing them. But I don’t get boners over them, especially when this non-sensical act of cowardice and evil pops up in the news. Again.

And again.
And again…

That’s just goofy. There is no Amendment guaranteeing your right to own or drive a car. You’re still left with have to overcome that 2nd Amendment roadblock that’s prevent people like you from banning all firearms.

The guy has zero friends on his Facebook page. His last posting was a link to an article “Signs You Have Raised a Serial Killer”. Dated two weeks ago.

(post shortened)

You’re already a target. What’s the chances of you surviving being struck by a car or surviving shrapnel from an IED?

I don’t want to ban all firearms. So please don’t misrepresent my position.

The right to own a gun, and what we have now, are two circles that overlap. How much is a matter for lawyers and lawmakers. To assume that we have the best laws currently for public safety is a difficult assumption to defend.

Before, or after they were responsible gun owners?

This was on the college’s web site page (the web site is currently down)

Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any other objects as weapons on college property, except as expressly authorized by law or college regulations, is prohibited.

Any student who brought his gun to campus would face a disciplinary action.

For a 21 yo? No.

If I had my druthers, I’d limit caliber, capacity, firepower, and action based on particulars of age, background and training.

So, let’s just say, a 21 yo can purchase a small-capacity, lever-action, .22 rifle w/decent training and a background check. But not a semi-automatic assault rifle. That would require being ~35 yo, with rigorous training and background check before issued a license.

Do you consider all mass murdering bombers to be “responsible gun owners” or do you just consider them to be potential “responsible gun owners”? You seem to have an obsession with blaming gun owners for all mass murders when it’s obvious that mass murderers use many different methods to murder people en masse.

How many people die in bombings in the US?

Missed the edit.

I’d also put a cap of two or three guns per individual. But some sort of gradual, tiered measure of weapon vs. age/training/background is better than just handing a high-caliber semi-auto assault rifle to a 21 yo.

(btw, I get the Mini-14 is a very similar rifle compared to the AR-15… nice try  )

It’s not a pro-gun side but you don’t seem capable of understanding that… If you took the gun away from today’s situation nothing would change. The problem is the person committing the act and not the methodology.

30,000 people die in car accidents every year in the US. Doesn’t change the argument one iota. Nobody at the college was killed by a gun. They were killed by a person intent on doing them harm.

When I was young we carried knives in school yet nobody was stabbed. I made a foot long knife in shop class and carried it around as a bookmark while making it. Some of the schools in my area had shooting clubs yet nobody was shot. Again, a person killed those students. A fact almost completely ignored by this thread and the news industry.

unlike a car, I can carry a gun for protection. That’s not a hobby.

nobody suggested they serve the same purpose. They’re tools. Both can be used to kill a lot of people. Someday you’ll understand that. Well maybe not.

Updated fatalities. Thankfully it’s gone down from 13 that was reported earlier today.
