My 'Homosexuals' thread wasn't trolling

Excuse me, Desmostylus? What did I ever do to you? It’s not really so much effort to read through that thread, which you need to do for the most part to fully appreciated the point I was trying to make.

Up until now, I’ve always respected you, but this pretty much tears it.

Cope with criticism well, don’t you. This is the pit. Take or shove it.

Yes, it’s the Pit. That doesn’t mean you have to be rude, does it? If it does, I’ll happily tell you to go felch a goat or something, but otherwise, I’ll just conduct myself with a bit of decorum, thank you. :stuck_out_tongue:

I kinda thought it was funny, too, in a juvenile way. And since there was an explanation of the joke in the OP, it doesn’t look like trolling to me: one of the characteristics of trolls, I thought, was that they don’t admit to what they’re doing.

As Pizzabrat suggested, it looked to me like the entire funny was supposed to be in the OP, as opposed to trolling tactics, where teh funny is supposed to appear in responses to the OP.

But since the thread was closed and nobody was banned, I don’t think anything besides Pizzabrat’s dignity got harmed.

Daniel

Although I’m not arguing against Lynn and condoning what pizzabrat did as right, I can understand where the desire to do so came from. Having been around long enough to watch H4E pretty much only pop up in threads pertaining to homosexuality so that she may brandish her disdain and spout her stance scripturally or pat someone else on the back who views it as negatively as she does, it makes one wish to give her that very opportunity just to watch it degenerate into how sad it really is. Or to hope that she might ever see how damaging/hurtful all that is and how she truly sounds/pushes people further away from God. If that makes sense.

I’ve often hoped to make it to one of those threads before she does (although that’s nigh impossible), for the chance myself to type something as innocuous as “10, 9, 8…” etc. for the countdown of when she’ll arrive. The joy of being able to follow through on the joke is tempting. So, in other words, despite the fact that I wouldn’t ever really do it anyway, I empathize with the idea and understand the feeling pizzabrat. Unfortunately, although one has little tolerance for intolerance (ugh, that sounds way too verbose), the only way to truly be tolerant is not to give in to impulses like these and hope that people get it by example and critical thinking. Sigh. But what a dilemna when something continually gets one’s goat, eh?

Heh. That wasn’t a prank in the Pit, that was a boardwide prank. And believe me, TubaDiva didn’t seem to appreciate it. I do think, however, that some of the Teeming Millions did.

Oh I think nearly everyone did, even the prankee seemed to take it in the spirit in which it was intended. I still get a chuckle over over it.

You know, it took me quite a while to figure out how to link to individual posts. Good god, chill the fuck out.

How do you link to individual posts?

Daniel

You add the post ID to the URL like so:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=172341&postid=3184220

But how do you find out what a post’s ID is?

Daniel

Hover the cursor over any of the post-related buttons or links (“report this post”, Edit or Quote), and you’ll see the postid in the status bar of your browser, or you can right-click on any of those and click properties, and get it that way.

Yes, I do know how to do it, I merely chose not to in this case. :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t forget the little anchor thingie at the end, “#post…”, otherwise you won’t go to the correct post, just the correct thread.

With the following format, you don’t have to know the threadid number, just the post id. Here’s the format:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&postid=3184237#post3184237

I think to the thread, as often it is important to read things in context.

Desmostylus you were out of line. Just because we are in the Pit doesn’t mean you have to act like an ass. Unless you have some grudge against Q.E.D., then feel free to do whatever you were trying to do.

Oddly enough, that doesn’twork on my browser (IE 6.0) for some reason. In fact none of the methods do, except when I click on “go to first unread post”, which uses the #post anchor as well. Huh.

FWIW, in retrospect, I think Desmostylus was just trying to be cute by using “Pit” language to make a minor nitpick, but I could be mistaken. In any case, I’m over it.

FWIW, I don’t have any grudge against Q.E.D.. I was being a smartass.

Well, there you go, then. I shoulda known, being a smartass of some repute myself.
