My hope

If this is in the wrong forum, I guess a mod might move it.

My hope is that, now that George W. Bush is apparently going to assume the Presidency of the United States, that we can get beyond an agonizing and divisive election, the likes of which we’ve not seen in the memory of anybody posting here. If you voted for him, you won the election. If you voted for Vice President Gore, you’re candidate didn’t make it, although he sure came close. If you’re one of either of the above, keep in mind that the Libertarians, Greens and Reform voters see little, if any, difference between the two.

I am of the hope the President Bush will be able to be, as he’s put it during the campaign, a uniter, not a divider. If it’s done, it’s done, and let’s get on with the everyday politicking.

I take comfort in the indisputable fact that Bush will make an INFINITELY funnier president than Gore, whether he tries to or not. And I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes for a billion bucks because things will be crappy for whichever one won.

Well, maybe a billion. He just has to survive a really crappy job for four years. I’ve done that, and for a hell of a lot less money.

I’d have to agree with you on both points, drop. Geo. W. will definitely bring more personality (and employment to the cartoonists) than VP Al would to the office, and, yes…, a tough position to be in. Regardless of who assumes office, it appears the economy’s headed for a dip. How much does the President have to do with that? I know Cecil addressed the subject once, but I’m not finding it.

drop, I agree. Letterman will be much better over the next 4 years with Dubya as prez.

I hate to have to point it out, but the election is still in the hands of the electoral college. If three of them get a change of heart (or get sick and are replaced by a sympathetic governor), it could still tie.

Valid point, Extant. Ain’t politics fun? Maybe now the rest of the country can see why it is the top spectator sport in Chicago.

And welcome aboard. A WISE wiseass is always a good addition.

I think your last statement is why the election was so close. There is not much difference between them.

As for the people, well they liked as many things about Bush as they liked about Gore. Neither represents the extremes of their party.

The Florida fight became political and came down to having a D or an R in front of your name. The media even assigned D and R to judges, who are supposed to be impartial.

If people will look at issues and forget D/R then everything will be OK.

I agree, beatle. I voted for Gore but now that Bush (apparently) has the win, I’m hoping that he makes the best of it. Other men have exceeded expectations and grown in the office. Who knows? Maybe in four years I’ll be voting for Bush to be re-elected.

As much fun as Letterman, et al, will have with a Dubya presidency, Jay Leno has said that neither Gore nor Shrub will provide the sheer volume of joke material that Clinton has.
