My kid has gone right off the rails. I'm so ashamed.

Please steer him away from the thread in Cafe Society on Jazz For Jazz Fans. He’s liable to find out even more terrible things than you thought.

Heh. Have no fear Zeldar, my kid would rather walk across hot coals than delve into the depths of the SDMB. As it is, he thinks his mum is a complete psycho for hanging out here with the (other) psychos who post on the board.

That’s absolutely fine by me…it means that he will never read the stuff I post about him anyway!! FREE LICENCE for ME…YAH.

If he discovers jazz interpretations of classical music, you might really be in for it. He will then want the original classical music for comparison and might even learn to like the stuff.

Save his soul. Put on Earth, Wind, and Fire.

Jazz: Noise made by those who can’t play music for those who can’t understand music (especially those occasional, offkey bleats and blats tortured out of a trumpet by Miles Davis).

God help me, I’d rather listen to Missy Elliott.

Oh, my.

My oldest son is nearly 17, and he has a serious Jazz habit too.

Every CD he buys, jazz. Posters on the wall, jazz greats. Books, jazz-oriented. Right now he’s searching thrift stores for jazz shirts, whatever that means.

He follows me around saying things like, “Listen, Mom! That’s in seven-eight. And then it switches, righhhhhht HERE, to three-four.” Then he gets this look on his face–well, did you see the Seinfeld episode where Jerry heard Elaine jokingly making really sexy comments on a cassetter recorder? That sort of ohmanWHEWbaby! sort of look? THAT’s how my son looks at those moments.

Last year, he went to the used-instrument store and bought an $800 bass trombone because it was “way better” than his old starter trombone. Now he wants another trombone, a silver-colored one without the trigger thingy this time, because it will sound “brighter and more jazz, y’know?”

Bless your heart. Good luck.

Best,
karol

I hate to bring this up in polite company, but it has to be said, for the sake of the child. From what I’ve heard, so far, he’s in trouble. But, at least if he sticks to traditional jazz, he can remain a productive member of society, much like a high-functioning alcoholic. But, it seems like he may be in danger of slipping away, into the most dreaded jazz zone of all (sensitive readers may wish to hit the Back button, now); fusion.

As I said, I hate to even mention it, in polite company. But, if he’s already listening to Miles, he’s in danger. There’s always the temptation to explore Davis’s whole catalog. And, as he was the founder of… shudder…fusion, that could be bad. Very bad.

It’s not jazz I object to so much as the people who listen to jazz and think that pushes them into some elite realm. And have a real attitude about it, of course.

I’m a publicly confessed jazz addict.

I blame the Nazis. They hated jazz, so I figured it must be good.

Now I’m up to three Coltrane albums a day.

Help me!

Lock up your pocketbook.

With the BabyBrother, first it was a new jazz bass, fretless, so he could do more jazz licks. Then it was a 5 string. THEN he had to have the 1950’s model Kay upright (Oak finish, not dark). Now he wants a bajo sixto to do some fusion stuff with. AND blues, too.

Of course, he learned enough to make his living doing it…but I tell people that he’s a panhandler downtown. The truth’s too embarrassing.

Kam you need to watch him carefully and make sure he doesn’t try to corrupt others. Leechboy was bitten by the jazz bug last year and I have several times caught him sneaking jazz CD’s into Bubbaleechies room. He even proudly boasts here about playing a jazz CD to her. I’m afraid it may already be too late for Bubbaleechie but you can save your other children if you get onto it early enough - remember prevention is better than than the cure.

chokes He may have other issues than jazz, dear. It may really be too late for him. ;j

Miles Davis? I think you should count your blessings. Many parents deal with far worse.

I mean, if it were Kenny G, you’d have to send him to one of those military camps.
