My cat, also named Mina, is like Morgan. She has come to tolerate and accept Mrs. SMV, but she’s a daddy’s cat all the way - naps in my lap, demands head and chin rubs from me, sleeps in my bed.
We call the kneading behavior “making biscuits”, as well.
I had a kitten who did this and he never outgrew it. He was always sucking on a button, sucking on a piece of your clothing, sucking on the comforter…whatever. Into old age. (Sadly, he did not get that old. I think he died at about 12.)
I believe he was taken from his mother too early. A person I know who breeds cats refuses to let her Maine Coon kittens go before they are 10 weeks old. Basically, they stay with mama cat until mama cat says bye. I know my little guy was younger than that when I got him.
In the cats-is-weird department, I had one who would openly beg to be petted. She would pester, trip you, force her head against your hand. Then, the second she’d had enough…she would bite. This was not a thing you could ever tell. If you stopped before she had enough, she would continue to pester. One second after she’d had enough–CHOMP.
My question is: do you actually call him Abomination, or do you shorten it? I ask for two reasons: one, I always nickname pets that have long names, making it easier to call them. And, two, I just love the idea of you calling him “Bomb-y”.
Funny thing. Originally we thought he was a girl, so the nickname was Mina. (AboMINAtion.)
We took him to the vet a few weeks ago and they told us he was a boy. I wanted to change the name, but Sr. Weasel told me I was being gender essentialist. He already knows his name as Mina, so Mina it is. We still slip up and call him ‘‘she’’ so I just say my kitty is gender-fluid.
I considered so many variations but never ‘‘Bomb-y.’’ I’ll have to give that one a try and see what he thinks.
My 11 year old male loves to suck and nibble on my pinky finger. He wasn’t weaned early so I guess he just does it to show how much he loves his Meowma.
My calico gets over stimulated if you pet her in the normal stroking manner. So instead we pat her like you would a dog. You can practically beat on her and she just purrs even louder and occasionally flops her tongue out or drools.
Mort’s a big one for that too. Someone once told me that he liked it so much because it was sexually stimulating for him. That’s okay with me. I had his testicles chopped off; seems like the least I can do.
The cat may do the rabbit kick, or grab and bite when you give it a belly rub, but that doesn’t always mean the cat’s not enjoying the belly rub. Grabbing, kicking, and swatting is how cats play. Don’t worry, new cat owners. You can easily tell the difference between the “Hee, this is fun!” Kick and the “Don’t touch me asshole!” Kick. The force the cat uses, and whether it tries to get away will tell you.
As my kitten Tippy said in another thread, “I like biting!”
My cat is three or four now. She was taken away from her mother at 5 or 6 weeks and if I have a fluffy blanket on the bed, she will nurse it. She also gives her tummy and then bites when she’s had enough.
A really odd thing she does is when I don’t shave for a few days and my beard is coming in, she’ll lay on my chest when my alarm clock goes off and groom my chin and neck.
I had a wool-sucker. She bonded with an old afghan my stepmother had knit twenty years earlier; it probably smelled like other cats.
Anyway, kitty lived to be 16 years old, and yes, was a wool-sucker her whole life. Just that blanket, though.
ETA: my long-haired boy cat likes tummy rubs and has never scratched me while getting one. He just flops over on his side when he’s had enough. He also likes to be brushed and groomed and will come running if I call out “BRUSHIES!”
Cobalt used to try to suck on my hair while I was sleeping (which always woke me up). I developed a habit of pulling the sheets around my head and holding them under my chin, with only my face sticking out. I think he stopped doing it around age 2 or so, and I stopped sleeping that way in another year. He does still purr and knead all the time, though.
Aww. Cats make me so happy. It’s a joy to see Merlin play with the kitten, now, because he’s not running in terror and they both seem content to have a playmate. I’m honestly surprised how fast Merlin adjusted considering he spent 12 years in solitude.
I have one cat who doesn’t know she’s a cat, and hates the others. She leaves them alone if they leave her alone. The middle boy (7 I think) tries to play but quickly makes himself the persecuted victim and he runs away (he’s also the biggest, at a not-fat 16 pounds with huge teeth. Puss). The 9 year old and 2.5 year old are the buddies who sleep together and wrestle. Cats is weird.
We have a learning-disabled dog who licks the air. He’ll be licking his foot or the couch and we’ll reposition him… and for quite a while he’ll just keep licking the blank space in front of him.
On the subject of to touch or not touch, I once had a cat named Rasputin who did not want his feet touched, ever. Of course, that just made trying to touch his feet irresistible.
We had a little game between us called Picklepuss. I would try to touch his foot, and he would try to swat my fingers. If I managed to touch his foot without being swatted, I would squeal, “Picklepuss!” in the annoying high pitched tone one uses with cats. If he swatted me, I would squeal, “Popsicle!” in the same tone.
It sounds like I was being mean to Rasputin. If he didn’t want his feet touched, I should’ve respected that.
But I think he knew it was a game. He was free to walk away at any time, and I always tired of playing before he did.
The cats I have now just aren’t interested in playing Picklepuss.
I love touching cat feet. Especially when their little paws hug your finger. Merlin does that with his. Mina is less happy about having his feet touched, but he’s young, maybe he’ll get used to it.
