My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - General Discussion [edited title]

Male, 44, employed, no kids*. :stuck_out_tongue:

Twilight Sparkle. Although Rarity and Fluttershy are fairly awesome, Ms. Sparkle has a book on sleepovers. How can I not like such a well-prepared (and well-researched!) pony?

  • I do have a niece, and thought to watch a few FiM episodes in case there was a quiz** about the toys I’d bought her. I’ve now seen all the episodes; she hasn’t.

** There were many quizzes with Number One Nephew about identifying Thomas the Train (= Tank Engine) characters. I failed them all: all those tank characters look the same with only different color schemes!

You forgot Doctor Whooves.

Crossover? I assume they know about it already.

“No, really, dear, I closely monitored what they saw the entire ten hours you were gone and it was all careerbuilder.com and Davey and Goliath.”

I’m a brony, even though I’m the proud posessor of a vagina.

/b/rony is a state of mind, not a gender disbursement.

And also, I refuse to vote in any poll that doesn’t have Derpy Hooves as an option.

Represent.

And I refuse to vote. Picking a favorite is impossible.

Amazing. Simply amazing. From the putrid depths of the vile gutter that is /b/, to the lofty heights of the SDMB, it seems the entire internet is full of ponies.

I’ve seen the term ‘bronette’ used, is that better? Actually, the term ‘brony’ originated from the /b/ image board, as in /b/ronies, while fans on the /co/ board were called /co/lts (/b/=random, /co/=comics and cartoons).
Also, rainbow pony is best pony. At least until Weird Al gets a cameo

Me too, couldn’t possibly choose. And I have two little figurines from Hasbro (yeah I got their merchandise, - that’s what they wanted isn’t it?). One is Fluttershy, the other Twilight Sparkle, but the only reason I didn’t get Applejack is because she didn’t have the little cowboy hat!

Oh why are they so cute? It’s not just their big eyes, but their little mouths and noses too! The animators just hit all the right notes with this one.

Oh, and I think I will vote - for Applejack. I love that accent! Many a time at work, when my colleague has abandoned me at the busiest time of the day, all I can do is roll up my sleeves and say “well, I guess it’s apple buck season!”

27, employed, in a long-term relationship but no kids. I watch the show with my girlfriend and we both adore Twilight Sparkle. We also love The West Wing, baseball, Starcraft 2, live music of all kinds, science, and cooking. Care to pigeonhole us?

This has been suggested but I’m not sure it will satisfy you: Tumblr: Image
Also, how are you like Pinkie Pie?

I usually dislike the term “bro” and anything that is jock-like. However, the contrast between the connotations of “bro” and the cutesiness of a show intended for young girls is something I appreciate.

So, “bronies” is a real thing? I was positive it was some kind of joke.

Does anyone know if they make Pony cufflinks or tie clips?

I’m a little dismayed that no one’s voted for Rarity yet – aversion to her fashion interest, maybe? Even Applejack has a vote, and her only focus episode wasn’t one of the standouts, really.

I think someone on RPG.net had posted links to cutiemark pins… maybe from deviantart. Can’t find them now because both sites are blocked at work.

Lot of people think that because…well, it’s My Little Pony, ferchrissakes, and this is the internet where everyone is a cynical asshole. Anyone who says they enjoy it has to be trolling or doing it “ironically”.

There’s never been a lack of adults who enjoy well-made cartoons, though, and the quality of the show is good enough that it rises above cutesy kids-only pap. There’s an intelligence to the show folks have responded well to, plus the art and animation hit the sweet spot where it’s cute and appealing without being cloying and childish, like the original MLP was.

Though I do think people go overboard in their enthusiasm sometimes. But only sometimes.

I like it!

Oh, just generally goofy. I can be shy, too, by turns, and I’m definitely not AS goofy as Pinkie Pie, but I can identify with the filly. Well, there’s that and my toothless baby gator…

I actually really relate to Fluttershy in the bird episode. Not so much when she’s rescuing it but more when she’s freaking out about going to the party and at one point says, “Maybe I shouldn’t go.” I go through that before parties/events more than I’d like to admit to.

That’s why I was confused, I didn’t know there was a new version. I thought all these people were watching My Little Pony cartoons from the eighties.

I think this is appropriate.

Love that image.

Give it a shot - all the episodes of the new show (“My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”) are readily available on Youtube, apparently because the parent company makes more money off merchandise than the actual show itself.

Be forewarned, though, it’s addictive as hell, and very different from previous incarnations of the show. Lauren Faust, the (sadly former) showrunner, intentionally developed MLP:FiM as an inversion of the original concept, dropping the super-girly silliness and simplistic characters/ storytelling and replacing them with gorgeously detailed artwork and some of the most appealingly three-dimensional characters in television animation.

I find that MLP:FiM hits that magic “Pixar spot,” in that it has enough complexity and finely-tuned sense of irony to appeal to adults, while maintaining an incredible amount of heart and underlying optimism. Its funniest gags will sail right past five-year olds, but it never stoops to cynicism or “darkness” or incessant pop culture references the way, say, a Dreamworks animated movie might. It’s fun and happy and cute, but in a way that isn’t sugary or condescending to the viewer (whether he or she be child or adult).
