My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - General Discussion [edited title]

I got 34 out of 45 answers right with 3:42 minutes left. Can you do better on a first try?

Lauren’s an absolute doll, and I’m sad she left. She’s so responsive to the fans.

42, 4:09 left. (Missed Candy Apples, Paradise, and Steamer (which is a WTF name for both sides of the coin).)

This was all explained quite thoroughly in the pilot episode–each pony represents one of the Elements of Harmony. Applejack is honesty, Rarity is generosity, Fluttershy is kindness, Pinkie is laughter, Rainbow is loyalty, and Twilight is magic.

I don’t have a favorite pony, though one of my best friend is Twilight. Her favorite color is purple, she would live in a library if it was possible, she’s quite cynical, and she has the exact. same. haircut.

Actually, I think I love the cameo ponies as much as I do the regular cast. Especially the fashion critic pony with all the Tim Gunn mannerisms.

Hoity Toity? Yeah. The other one, Photo Finish (the photographer pony obsessed with Fluttershy) was great, too. “Let’s. Make. The MAGICKS!”

QFT x1000.

I’m a grown-ass man, no children, but this show just makes me happy. Found it through fun 4chan gifs.

I’m about 50% Twilight Sparkle (bookish, slightly nerdy, mediator), 20% Fluttershy (shy, kind, reserving) 15% Pinky Pie (goofy, fun-loving) and 15% Rarity (style-conscious, snobbish.) No parts Rainbow Dash, though she has the best-looking cutie mark.

“cute and appealing without being cloying and childish (credit Bosstone)” - This is the best and most accurate description I’ve heard of the series, and I agree. If I ever have a daughter this will be the first cartoon I’ll watch with her.

This guy?

Older MLP thread.

What are all y’all’s favorite episode(s)? Me, I like the “slice of life” episodes that reveal or examine some interesting aspect of the main cast’s personalities. I also dig the musical numbers, so episodes like “Winter Wrap-Up” and “Suited for Success” are among my faves.

I also really enjoy the episodes that pair up two of the ponies in some internal character-driven conflict, like “Fall Weather Friends” or “Look Before You Sleep” (which I was rather shocked to find out is considered a “lesser” episode by many fans - it’s one of my favorites just for Twilight’s bookish approach to slumber parties alone!). Conflict between the main cast tends to make more interesting stories than an external antagonist like Gilda or Nightmare Moon, IMO. It illuminates aspects of both characters involved and often better illustrates the underlying “friendship is hard work - but worth it!” theme of the show.

My favourite is probably “Swarm of the Century”. Second, third and fourth places go to “Suited for Success”, “Sonic Rainboom” and “A Dog and Pony Show”.

“Swarm of the Century” and “Suited for Success” are both fun disasters, and Suited for Success has one of my favourite lines of the series:

“You’re not a laughingstock, Rarity.”
“She kind of is!”

“Sonic Rainboom” appeals to the part of me that likes Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

“A Dog and Pony Show” I like just for Rarity, Tyrant of the Underdark!

Ah, OK. I’m not a “get off my lawn” type at all; it’s just that with my penchant for the internet, it’s very rare that something like this takes me completely by surprise. I may not have watched it, but I’ve usually at least heard of it by the time it reaches this apparent level of fandom - at least in passing.

But this sprang upon me full-blown. It was a bit disorienting.

Yeah, I would agree with that. Even when it’s not an actual conflict between the cast, but just one of their positive personality traits taken to an extreme and getting them into trouble, it makes for a more interesting story. The one where Applejack is going to buck all the apples on the whole farm by herself and help everypony else with everything else is one of my favorites, as is Suited for Success.

One thing I kind of wonder about Suited for Success, though: was Twilight Sparkle actually angling for Rarity to make her a new dress, or at least remodel the one she brought in? I mean, somepony who has a book on how to have a slumber party would surely have a book on how to fix a button, right? And she had to know that the notion of such a plain dress going to the Gala would make a pony like Rarity’s brain explode. Somepony as generous and fashion-conscious as Rarity would almost surely offer to do whatever it took to keep that…old thing out of the Grand Galloping Gala.

You’re actually giving Twi both not enough and too much credit here, I think.

She might look at learning about sewing as a challenge and probably has a book on it, but it’s her best dress and she wouldn’t want to mess it up. Besides, Rarity’s the dressmaker in town, and the moral of the episode in Applebuck Season (the stubborn Applejack one) is that you should be able to accept the help your friends can offer. So I’m sure she figured she was respecting Rarity’s talents by asking for her help.

On the other [del]hoof[/del] hand, Twilight is still impossibly naive about the world outside books. Other than the concept of friendship, she really has no clue. I have no doubt she has zero fashion sense and had no idea the dress was tacky and frumpy.

Really, I have to imagine fashion sense is not a typical thing in ponies. They do walk around naked most of the time, after all.

It’s always fun to see one of the characters turn one of her ostensible strengths into a weakness - and to see how the others end up reacting to her subsequent going-off-the-deep-end, each in their own unique ways. “Party of One” being the apotheosis of this subgenre.

Nah, I’m with Bosstone on this one. Twilight’s the one pony of the main six who really wouldn’t have a clue that the dress she brought in was “plain” (Applejack, the other fashion-ignorant pony, wouldn’t have even bothered bringing one in). The idea that she really planned to go to this extravagant gala in “that old thing” is in line with her characterization - and rather endearing, if you ask me.

Haute couture, please!

Hi, my name is Cornelius and I am a brony. I love MLP, sometimes when I watch it I can almost feel the snarky sarcastic cynic part of me take a back seat for a little while. I voted for Fluttershy, she is awesome, kind and caring but has a bit of a dark side to her and can do the STARE. I don’t really act like her, but I think that I perceive the world the way she does.

The snarky cynical part of me squees at the show, even the fashion parts. Rarity’s probably my least-favorite character, but I still enjoy watching her segments.

Course, that’s only when I watch the show. Online, the cynicism and snark is back in full force. Half the fun for me is deconstructing and playing with the setting and character relationships through a cynical adult perspective.

In turn, that makes it really entertaining when I encounter the entirely-too-earnest part of the fandom that gets shocked and appalled at everything we cynics do.

Here’s where I got my Rainbow Dash pins. They’re being custom made, so you’ll have to wait to get in on the next batch. The metal cutie mark pins are about 1" long, shouldn’t be too difficult to modify them to serve as cufflinks or tie clips.

Okay…

Well, if any of you play the sims 2 too, I’ve run across stuff this week for you:
