My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - General Discussion [edited title]

So, what emotional states did your kid go through in the last Gogzilla-themed episode?

She laughed so hard she didn’t want to decorate the Christmas tree. I had told her the synopsis a few weeks ago, so every week since it’s been “Is this the week Spike turns big?” Maybe because she knew what was coming, she wasn’t traumatized.

Next week’s episode concerns me. Intellectually, I think it’ll be good, but I’ve watched one of the older generation’s Twinkle Wish Adventure too many times to feel comfortable about a Christmas-esque pony extravaganza.

The latest episode has some disturbing implications. If the only way a dragon can grow up is by exercising his greed, does that mean that Spike is now trapped in a permanent state of babyhood? It feels a little cruel to prevent a sentient creatures natural development in order to be able to keep a good assistant. I really hope they let Spike mature eventually.

I was under the impression that the greed accelerates his growth but isn’t the only cause of it.

Frankly, it seems like that’s the only way for him to remain a sapient being.

Look at the two adult dragons we’ve seen - the sleepy one that almost smoked Ponytown out, and the one whose hoard Spike happened upon in Owl’s Well That Ends Well.

Both completely non-verbal. Neither seeming particularly amenable to reason. Both violent beasts. Spike becomes less and less verbal as he grows. It seems like only young dragons are capable of complex thought.

He might not be a vampire or a mindflayer, but “it’s natural” is not a good basis on which to oppose avoiding bad things.

Just watched the xmas episode, it was awesome, as they usually are. Did anyone else get a The Watchmen vibe from this one? The 3 different pony types get along not because they are naturally good and friendly, but because of the ever present threat of the winter spirits. So its either everyone gets along or freezes to death. I am sure there’ll soon be people attributing those spirits existence to “Trollestia” claiming that having them around makes it easier to rule her kingdom.

You might say they’re … Trotskyists.

I’ll be here all week.

I loved today’s episode (The Last Roundup). My 4-year old loved it even more. I was a little concerned seeing Derpy. I was afraid that catering to the bronies would not appeal to little kids, but my kid laughed her tiny ass off at Derpy. Then she bawled her eyes out when Big Mac cried. The Lucy reference was great. So many little details in this episode. I think I’m going to have to watch it a few more times before I catch it all… and with a 4-year old, I’m sure we’ll watch it a lot. Pickle Barrel. Kumquat.

How did you kid handle the conflicts in Hearth’s Warming Eve? Is a 4 year old able to understand that the characters were playing characters?

Was she scared of Pinkie’s angry faces?

What was the Lucy reference?

She got a little scared of the Windigos, but she understood the whole thing was a play within the show (very meta for her age!). She loves Pinkie’s faces. So do I. At her angriest, Pinkie is still just funny.

The Lucy reference was the conveyor belt. The old chocolate factory episode where Lucy and Ethel couldn’t keep up with the candies, very much like Pinkie and Fluttershy and the cherries.

Wow, remind me to never break a Pinkie promise! It kinda sounded like she was channeling Him from Powerpuff Girls.

I think I might make some cherrychangas/chimicherries today. Found a recipe.

They have Wendigos? You don’t fuck with them, awesome pony or not.

This is not her first apperance this season, they’ve been dropping her into a lot of shots.

What about the Doctor Who pony? As I refuse to watch the series I only know of him from YouTube bits. And Q (John DeLancie)? No Q (Corbin Bernsen)?

(To Brony and Psych fan daughters: “They’re all named Q, mostly.”)

No, but it was the first time that she spoke and was named. (I had read about it before I watched it, so when I saw her, I knew what was going to happen).

But I prefer this one: http://chzbronies.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic-brony-jesus-didnt-have-a-dog-he-had-a-pony.jpg

Jesus, he’s big.

(MLPonies are estimated to be about 4 feet tall from front hoof to top of head, which would make Him around 9 feet tall in those pictures, I think.)

It would take Him another couple of decades yet to grow to this size.
