My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - General Discussion [edited title]

It was indeed a rollercoaster. Had to pause several times for a few crying jags. Had to have several “They always have happy endings” pep talks. She was so sad that everypony was mad at “Twily” and then that Cadenza was evil and banished her. Then when all the changlings took Mane Six form, she just was laughing her little ass off. Pinkie grabbing Twilight and using her tail to pump up her horn power was a big favorite for both of us.

She seemed to follow the story pretty well, especially when I pointed out how it was like how Ursula stole Ariel’s voice and pretended to be her to marry Eric. She had a little “oh, I get it!” look on her face.

I too didn’t find the songs exceptional on first listen, but I’m sure they’ll develop into earworms at some point, as they all do. I guess in the good Cadence/bad Cadence song, the technical term for the chord progression during Bad Cadence’s parts is called “deceptive cadence” and it was a deliberate move on the composer’s part.

I think it was an excellent episode and despite being traumatized, I got an immediate “Can I watch it again?” from the kid. They really pull out all the stops for the season premiers and finales. I’m so bummed it’s going to be 5-6 months for new ones, most likely.

I browse Equestria daily and My little brony on memebase pretty often, and when I run out of stuff there I hit youtube to find good PMVs/abridged series*/music remixes. I also poke around deviantArt to find the best comics/fanart.

And yes, ponies have pretty much taken over my life by this point.

*Friendship is Witchcraft is really funny.

As for the season finale, I tried to go in without any preconceptions or super-high expectations, and I was pretty impressed with how it all went down. A lot of folks are complaining that we’ve never seen Twilight’s brother before even though they’re supposedly close. I can see where they’re coming from, but it didn’t bother me that much. I actually identified with Twilight a lot, as my brother and I used to be really close, but ever since I moved away we’ve almost become strangers. I got teary-eyed at the BBBBF song, though on reflection it was probably the weakest song in the finale.

I noticed that, in Twi’s flashback, Cadence’s magic was light blue, but in the present it was bright green, so I knew something was up. I almost expected Discord to be involved in some way, but I like Chrysalis and her changelings as villains much better anyways. It bugs me that Celestia didn’t notice that anything was off with Cadence; was she bewitched as well? I have not been able to stop listening to This Day Aria since I first heard it; the voices and music are so amazing and it ranks right up there with the best Disney villian songs. Mr Ingram, you’ve outdone yourself.

I was also amazed that Celestia took on Chrysalis and was defeated. Like I said, I love the villains and would like some more backstory on them. The fight scene with the mane 6 and the changelings was kickass and funny. There’s one point in the fight where it looks like Fluttershy and RD have a very brief kiss; there are quite a few people online arguing over whether they did or not, but for now, I’ll choose to believe they did. The resolution seemed a little too simple and easy, but IMO the season premiere had that problem as well. The last song wasn’t great; just a generic lovey-dovey pop song that I swear I’ve heard somewhere before.

Probably my biggest problem with the episode is that I wasn’t really invested in the couple, which makes sense since this is the first time we see either of them. As a result, their ‘love solves everything’ spell that defeated all the villains in one fell swoop fell a bit flat. Overall though, this episode had some great drama, action, characterization, and music, and it was a great way to end the season.

Well, I didn’t have a problem with the resolution, they already showed how powerful Shining Armour’s love was by having Chysalis channel it to beat Celestia, and he was already shown to be an exceptionally powerful unicorn from the begining. When supercharged, it wasn’t too much of a cop-out.

What I did have a problem with was the real Candence, her mind-control ‘love’ ray was creepy and I don’t see why they made her a winged-unicorn.

All-in-all, I loved this episode

I think the implication is that all pony princesses are winged unicorns.

The toyline is coming out with a castle with the loving couple. The alicorn was mandated by Hasbro.

Maybe unicorns manifest wings if they have sufficient magical power, and that much power is required to be a serious player on the pony princess level. Thus all princesses are unicorns with wings. Maybe we’ll see a winged Twilight when Celestia completes her thousand-year plan* and officially names her the heir to the throne. Or maybe not.

*Why yes, I have spent time pondering Celestia playing out a Xanatos Gambit that incorporates the prophecy, her magic school, Luna, Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the Mane Six, the Elements, immortality, the sonic rainboom, the CMC, the return of Discord… Is there something wrong with that?

“All ponies are equal and special in their own way unless they have wings and a horn, in which case they’re better than you so shut up and start groveling.”

Well, I’ve watched the episode again, and there was lots that I missed the first time.

I originally thought that Chrysalis was stupid to teleport Twilight to the mine so close to Cadence, as it would show everyone something was amiss and give them a chance to escape, but thinking about it, she did it so Twilight, the other focus of Shining Armour’s love, would kill the real Cadence. Chrysalis certainly goaded Twilight into a frenzy, and it was only the “secret handshake” that stoped Twi killing Cadence. This show is seriously dark.

I did spot one plothole though, why didn’t Twilight go to Luna after she saw “Cadence” use her magic on her brother. I mean, Luna is powerful, and she knows how easily a pony can be led astray or corrupted. Shesh, Luna actually called Twilight out, but she ignored her.

I also caught many more of the little jokes, Pinkie is amazing.

Maybe

More likely.

Well, she’s definately being groomed for something… she had a princess as babysitter, Celestia is actively involved in her learning. Judging by her older brother, Twilight comes from a good magical pedigree.

This…

After being terrified and sad during the first viewing, my kid has now rewatched it two times and made me put the new songs on repeat for most of the day.

I was bugged by the alicorn thing too, but I relaxed a little during one of the repeated viewings today. I think she had to be a unicorn. She had to have magic, had to have a horn. When they’re in the caves, she flew them out of the caves. Twilight’s teleporting seems to have limits, so if Cadence (which I’ve also seen as Cadance, which bugs me greatly) didn’t have wings, they’d have been stuck. So maybe the toy people pushed the alicorn thing, but the writer did a good job of justifying the need for it in-story.

Oh, Twilight is groomed for something. Think about it. Day is Celestia, Night is Luna… and you’ve got Twilight in the middle.

Oh fuck, my brain exploded!

Yep. And her coat, mane, and tail are dusk-themed to continue the pattern. They just aren’t magically active like Celestia’s or Luna’s Nightmare form. (Yet.)

Sorry, Michael. We…well, we thought you knew.

We had to watch it two more times today, and I endured many, many impromptu renditions of “BBBFF” and “This Day Aria”. The songs did grow on me lots. Hearing them multiple times a day might make them grow OFF me soon.

We showed it to a 5-year old boy today who is a fan of the show and I loved watching his face when Chrysalis sent Twilight to the caves, when she revealed herself to everyone, when the battle started. He loved it and didn’t want to leave to go to his baseball game until the episode was over. I know it’s not a show ONLY for little girls, but seeing a young boy go nuts for singing pink ponies is awesome. The look of happiness on his face when he got Pinkie Pie at McDonald’s last month was amazing. He’s not my kid, but I like that he’s learning at least a tiny bit about not adhering to strict, arbitrary gender roles.

My favorite bit was the Burly Brawl. Specifically Pinkie’s parts. “Mmmnah. Seen it done better.”

Yes, this is exactly it. It’s been taken for granted by the creators, and, I had thought, the whole fandom, since before there were any indicators there were any princesses other than Celestia and Luna.

It’s fairly implicit in the official explanation of why Celestia and Luna are pegasus unicorns - that as Princesses, they have to represent all 3 pony races, therefor have aspects of each (though what they get from earth ponies isn’t nearly so obvious).

It doesn’t even require all the Princesses be related - it’s assumed by many that Celestia will one day promote Twilight to Princess status, and when she does, Twilight will, like Celestia and Luna, be taller and slimmer than the average pony, and winged, just like the other Princesses.

There were two new songs leaked at Comic Con, as well as a buttload of hints as to next season’s storylines.

From Equestria Daily:

“Most of the things in the earlier post were very “hint hint” style. The questions from the audience were not pre-screened at all, so naturally everyone asked about season three.
Trixie’s return was “confirmed” with a “I think we’re not allowed to say, but I will expect season three to maybe see some great and powerful stuff”. after someone asked if she would be returning. (yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes)
There was a great section about Derpy. Someone asked if she would be receiving anymore speaking roles, and the response basically said Hasbro loves Derpy, they have her everywhere now, but she probably wont be able to roll with anything other than background shots. You guys scared the poor girl!
Octavia’s section was a question about “Which background pony would you like to voice?”. This eventually lead to a shoutout for Octavia, where Cathy Weseluck just out of nowhere busted out an awesome voice for her, with a hint that she could do a duet with Rarity.
Fluttershy turning into a dragon and her cute voice coming from a giant lizard was actually mentioned by Tabitha. Sounds like season 3 to me!
More crazy ponies on the way! These are the best episodes btw.
Meghan reads Equestria Daily. Suddenly I’m even more insecure about my writing on this site! Please don’t read this blurb Meghan, I’m totally doing it in 10 minutes in my hotel room!
Dash not confirmed or denied for filly-fooling (this question was hilarious).
They hyped Luna up, so we will probably be seeing more of her.”

I am so damn excited.

Yeah, Trixie is too interesting to waste.

Where and when, exactly, is Equestria?

I don’t mean in relation to the setting in the first generation MLP, although sun_tzu has an interesting take on the matter at RPG.net. (Seriously, go read the threads. They’re epic.) In my personal preference only Friendship Is Magic exists, which I know leaves the little shout-outs to previous incarnations just dangling.

Anyway, clues such as stellar constellations (“Orion has three stars in his belt, not four”) and other correspondences make me think that MLP:FIM takes place either on Earth or in a place influenced by Earthlings. The prevalence of random and inconsistent human artifacts - what TV Tropes calls “schizo tech” - reinforces my hypothesis, and restricts the time period of the show to no earlier than 19th century C.E. On the other hoof, the celestial mechanics of Equestria argue against FIM happening on our planet.

Another thing to consider is the behavior of the ponies and other sentients. Often their manipulation of objects and their environment is foreign to equines but appropriate to humans, but just as often they act like, well, ponies. (Again, TV Tropes to the rescue: see Furry Confusion.) Where and when did this influence originate?

At first I decided that Equestria is a post-apocalyptic Earth society and that ML ponies are the successors of humans, but I couldn’t get past the whole business of raising the Sun and Moon. Then a few weeks ago a solution came to me: Ponies are the descendents of avatars. As in the 2009 film, but humans put their minds into the bodies of candy-colored ponies instead of Pandoran aliens. And if said ponies were located in a vast artificial or terraformed environment, that would take care of much of the celestial differences. It could explain their civilization as the degraded oral and/or racial memory of how the human “riders” lived. It also raises the question of whether anypony alive knows the secret of Equestria. Celestia might know all or some of the story, or she and her sister might be the offspring of one who did. And Discord could be a messed-up avatar for a mind so old that it’s gone 'round the bend.

This is just a working hypothesis, and it still requires a lot of hand-waving and liberal application of Clarke’s Third Law, but it is my headcanon for now.

Here’s an alternative:

Equestria exists in a pocket dimension, similar to the domains in the Nevernever in The Dresden Files. Either it was primally chaotic, and Discord is its demiurge, or he succeeded in conquering it and plunging it into chaos. The ancestors of the ponies arrived–probably along with one or more humans–when a stellar conjunction occurred that made it possible to pass from Earth to the realm of Discord.

Exposure to the raw chaos of Discord either imbued the ponies with sapience, or merged them with the humans who were drawn in with them. Discord may have even done this deliberately, to make more interesting playthings. Either way, the humans (if any) disappeared before Discord was overthrown, leaving the ponies with no more than the artifacts (saddles and such) that arrived with them to support fading memories of the other world.

Over time, the ponies began to develop their own ability to manipulate the chaos around them. At first they devoted their new-won power simply to establishing havens of relative safety, then some ponies began turning it to more sophisticated uses. These new efforts did not leave the ponies unchanged, however, and it is at this point that some began manifesting horns and wings, reflecting the manner in which they wielded the chaos-power. In time, a few ponies of the greatest strength and most versatile skill even manifested both traits.

Hidden in the largest island of stability the ponies were able to maintain, they worked in secret to turn the power of chaos against itself. As Discord at last realized his peril and began marshaling his power to break their stronghold, they succeeded in forging the Elements, artifacts capable of merging disparate streams of chaotic force into a unified whole, relying on the instinctive emotional coherence of the herd to guide the streams. A single pony could, in theory, wield all of the Elements at once, provided that pony could manifest all of the necessary emotional resonances, but such lack of focus would limit the power wielded as a result. It was intended that each of the creators would wield a single Element, but that plan fell apart; in the first instants of Discord’s attack, Luna succeeded in cloaking herself, along with Celestia and the Elements, in darkness. The others fell in a doomed battle against Discord, sacrificing themselves to cover the sisters’ escape with the Elements.

Although the stronghold was broken, many fragments of the ponies’ haven endured, and pony magic began to knit them back together at once. Satisfied that he had neutralized the true threat, Discord turned to crushing each island of resistance. Taking advantage of his distraction, the sisters launched a desperate counterattack, wielding all of the Elements between them, and succeeded in petrifying Discord, binding him to the form he had chosen for the battle.

With Discord’s power contained, the ponies’ haven was quickly restored, and began to spread. The lands outside reverted to a primal state, full of Discord’s other discarded playthings, but no longer the realm of perpetual madness over which he had presided. The original stronghold was never reclaimed, however. The sisters returned to it only once, to place the Elements there in a tribute to the fallen.

Over time, the ponies’ domain expanded into the land now known as Equestria. Its borders are defined in hoofprints, a sign of the most profound and primal pony magic: that of the earth ponies. Where they walk, there is Order.

(Note: This isn’t necessarily my headcanon. It’s just me going off on one of my obsessive world-building kicks.)

When will I learn to copy my [del]essays[/del] replies before hitting Preview Post? The board logged me out and I lost the whole ferschlugginer thing!

Balance, that’s an excellent scenario. My own personal objection is that I wouldn’t assign so much power to Discord. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the character as an antagonist and he’s definitely god-tier. I just feel that the force(s) required to create Equestria are greater still, beyond even the royal sisters.

After posting the Avatar comparison I remembered “Overdrawn At the Memory Bank”, a John Varley short story in which people vacationed by “doppling” into animal bodies. The more money you had, the better (i.e., more powerful) the animal you could choose. My version differs in that the bodies were in an extraterrestrial setting, but unlike Pandora this was accomplished in an artificial and/or terraformed world. Something like a Holodeck but more concrete and self-sustaining, and featuring hosts of differing abilities. At some point the connection with Earth was severed and Equestria and its inhabitants evolved toward their present forms.

Just to clarify, for the sake of convenience I have used “Equestria” to encompass the entire world/universe of MLP:FIM. Strictly speaking the name belongs to a realm within a larger landmass, to which ponies migrated as mythologized in the traditional Hearth’s Warming Eve Pageant.

Elegantly put.

Same here. It’s my headcanon until I decide it isn’t.
