My Mac-attack cat

I have two cats, Paris and Vienna. They are both free to roam around the house, including the room where I work on the computer. It’s not unusual for them to wander around the area on the floor where the surge protector and mass of wires are. Once in a while, Paris does something that shuts off the computer. Nothing is unplugged or even loose, the power strip is still on, and I’m always able to simply power up without doing anything else. And nothing else is affected, only the computer. This only happens with Paris, never with Vienna, though both cats weigh about the same.

I’m thinking that perhaps he briefly steps on the power switch, just enough to shut down the computer, but not long enough to affect anything else. If that’s the case, shouldn’t the surge protector prevent that from happening?

The surge protector prevents a power *spike *from damaging your equipment. I’m not sure how it would prevent a momentary *lowering *of power from happening.

Of course . . . but what kind of “lowering” would affect the computer and nothing else?

I don’t know, but it sounds to me like the computer is more sensitive to power loss than the other pieces of equipment. Often at my house there is some kind of power loss that causes the lights to flicker. Sometimes it trips the alarm clock, the stove, and the microwave. Sometimes the microwave doesn’t trip. The alarm clock always does.

Or possibly the socket on the power strip that the computer is plugged into is just barely loose enough that a passing cat can cause a brief loss of power as he bumps into the wires.
