Hey, he can’t be that smart – he still married Joy!
Did anyone else notice they muted the word “Amish” at the very beginning of the episode? Earl had a voiceover that mentioned “all those (short silence) people who get together to build a barn” or something to that effect. I’m sure this was due to the shootings at the Amish school this week. It was barely noticeable, but I heard the unnatural pause in the sentence and put two and two together from the context.
But we’re talking about smart half hour sitcoms on NBC…did I miss Scrubs this week? I’m thinking back to Tuesday and I don’t remember it being scheduled.
Yeah, I noticed that too. It was so obvious, and why they did it, maybe they should have left well enough alone. It’s not like he said, “all those Amish people who get together to bring their defenseless little girls to school” or anything.
I guess they just didn’t want to mention them at all, even though they weren’t making fun of them or anything. Then again, as my husband said, “How are the Amish going to know if someone makes fun of them on TV?”
Pretty good, I thought. My favorite moment: Randy wanted to keep stroking the girl’s beard, and said he wasn’t done. “Yes, you are!” Earl insisted, with a glare that I’ve never seen before - but that made me guffaw. I love little moments like that on this show.
Trion, good catch on Marlee’s translator. I knew I’d seen that guy before.
One thing I don’t understand. Earl’s Rasta nipples were clearly hairier when he was a kid - it wasn’t a matter of the rest of his chest hair “catching up,” as he said. Could our beloved Earl suffer from Male Pattern Nipple Baldness?
I didn’t even consider this possibility. I just thought he was searching for the right word, then gave up because he couldn’t remember it. And I think the line is a lot funnier if he simply refers to them as “those people.”
I saw an interview with Jason Lee about the bleep. He said it was bleeped bacause he didn’t want any reference to a tragedy, especially one so fresh, to be used in his show. I thought that was a very kind and thoughtful response. I suppose the $cientologist-bashers will be in to jump all over it, but I appreciate the fact that hey thoguht about it and come up with a quiet compromise.
Sorry if this is overanalyzing the show, but haven’t these people ever heard of scissors?
Young Earl could have trimmed his rasta nipples if he were so self-conscious. The bearded lady could shave if she wanted to quit the sideshow and fit into society. Or she could’ve shaved her mustache back in the Maggie P.I. days.
Perhaps that’s the comedy… the were too dense to realize this?
Maggie said she used to shave, and wax, and pluck, etc. but finally decided the beard was just part of who she was. That was one of the themes of the episode: learning to accept yourself as you are, and learning not to be freaked out by others who are different. Even the B-plot with Joy and the deaf public defender reinforced this. Joy’s plot’s usually show the Goofus side of that week’s Goofus and Gallant “what’s the right thing to do?” scenario.
