I am very sorry that this happened to you, but mostly I’m glad you weren’t injured. You should never meet a date in private, even though you are male, always meet in a public place.
Thank you. I like your screen name!
I hope you know, it’s OK for you to keep things from your parents. Part of my journey from being a child to being an adult was making mistakes, fixing them, and THEN telling my mom about it. For example, I wouldn’t have told my mom anything about the situation you’re in, until a replacement phone had been purchased and she needed to have my new number. I know it’s harder when you’re living with them. But it is possible to establish stronger boundaries than you’re currently implementing.
BTW, don’t listen to the shits giving you shit in this thread. It’s not your fault you were targeted by a thief. I’m a girl who has gotten into people’s cars on first dates many times, and I’ve never been victimized. Just internalize the lesson and don’t take it personally. I was targeted by the “be a secret shopper!” scam when I was 19 and lost about $250. I’m actually grateful for that, because it taught me a very valuable, not-too-expensive lesson early on in life.
Based on my expedience in Holland, I believe that it would work there. Based on my experience in the US combined with the OP’s actual experience in this specific case, you’ll get laughed out of the station unless it’s a small town and they happen to have nothing better to do.
hmmmm…this surely isn’t working for me…
Caught me being stupid. Works like magic!
You say that when you met her, you had a lot of trouble understanding her; did this also occur when you spoke to her on the phone?
Well ya fucked up, guess what? We all do mate. Just learn from it and move on.
We’re here for ya, man!
I love you guys!
Actually the phone is on but the data is turned off. Couldn’t find my phone. Turned on data and only after that did it find my phone. But my phone also announced it was being probed.
Cool app!
Other good free apps for after-theft phone recovery are Lookout and Prey. Lookout will also help you if you can’t find your phone and the volume’s turned off - it makes it play a loud siren sound. Allowed a waitress at an Appleby’s find my daughter’s phone when she left it there with the volume turned off while visiting an out-of-state college. And if the phone’s battery is about to die, the app sends a locator signal just before it dies and you can then look up the location of it on the website.
Always use a screen lock on your phone. It prevents butt-dialing and makes your phone harder to use if stolen. Lookout will take a photo and send the location of anyone who has 5 failed attempts to unlock the screen.
Chin up OP - it’s not like it will happen again. In fact something similar just happened to my cousins kid. Brand new phone, taking a taxi home, agrees to share with some dude who then gets out of the cab, asks to borrow the phone to call someone, from outside the taxi - then runs off.
Yikes. Sorry to hear that Bam Boo Gut. And thank you!
Tip for next time: don’t tell a stranger you’re meeting for the first time that you you’re carrying something so valuable, portable and easily fenced. Thieves love them some smartphones.
Nm
I’m sure they won’t - but if she’s arrested on something else, and someone does some searching, they might connect her to outstanding charges like this. One can hope, at least.
And MyFootsZZZ, I’m sorry your phone was stolen, and sorry you got victimized - OK, that sounds like the same thing, but it really is two things: your possession got stolen, AND you got taken advantage of and made to feel foolish. I had my Nook e-reader stolen a few months ago (foolishness on my part: took it with me to enjoy while relaxing at a water park, didn’t hide it well enough when I went to get lunch) and it still pisses me off. Not the reader itself, though I’m annoyed: the thief got a 2 year old outdated reader that is useless, but it was in a beautiful Oberon Design leather case that my husband had given me 3 months earlier and that I loved :(. So, while that’s not on the same level as your situation, it helps me understand how sad you are about it.
Here’s hoping you can get the thing deactivated, and a hint: change all your passwords for all your online stuff. The thief might be able to use this for a nice bit of identity theft if she (or partners in crime) get into your email etc. from the phone.
Good advice Mama Zappa. I will do that now. I’m really sorry to read about what happened to you. It really sucks.
This is why all cell phones need to have one or all of the following;
1; integrated dye-pack designed to identify the thief with dye splatter
2; some form of stungun tech designed to shock the thief and stun them into unconsciousness
3; a high-volume, high-frequency “shrieker” alarm designed for maximum hearing damage and triggered when thief holds the stolen phone to their ear
4; a small charge of high explosives integrated into the phone chassis
Any/all could be activated by calling a special secure number from another phone, or going to a secure webpage, entering the passcode number and confirming intent twice, then selecting which feature to activate
I hate thieves…
MyFootsZZZ have you logged in and identified where your phone is? This earlier post on page one sounds like your best option.
Did this work for you? That should be all you need for the cops to retrieve the phone.
