You did act like a jerk in that thread. You went way too far in attacking the OP personally based on the fact that didn’t agree with her belief about flight attendants right to free speech in this specific situation. You weren’t the only person who was rude in that thread, but you were the first and your rudeness was unprovoked. In my opinion, that is why you were the only one warned by the moderators. It didn’t help that the poster you attacked is widely respected (by me as well) for her consistent fairness and kindness. You couldn’t have known that, and you may not have been jumped on so hard if you’d attacked a more obscure target, but that doesn’t change the fact.

The mistake you made was assuming that anyone who disagrees with you must be an ignorant moron, and that you can win a debate by tearing apart the specific individual who started it. That may fly on Usenet, but it doesn’t work here.

Even though this is the Pit, tearing someone to shreds for no reason still makes you look like an asshole. Just because you’re allowed to flame doesn’t mean that’s the only way to talk to someone here. Once you started making allegations of racism (?) and deceit, you pretty much lost all credibility. Who is going to listen to the arguments of someone who assumes the worst about others with no evidence?

I hope you stick around, assuming you’re willing to change and learn. You could learn a lot here about how to present your arguments and convince people. You currently have no idea of how to do that, if your posts here are any guide. I’m honestly not trying to rip on you – I myself have learned a great deal, and still have a long way to go.
As a far-left leaning liberal, it’s tempting to bask in the superiority of one’s moral convictions, dismissing those who disagree as selfish and ignorant. However, that’s really counterproductive. I think that we lefties need to learn how to persuade people who hold differing opinions without condescending to them, if we are ever going to make a difference.
My advice to you is to apologize to Anthracite, without any qualifications, and then forget this whole thing. If this doesn’t happen again, most people will forget this whole thing pretty quickly.
I didn’t think you were attacking me, it only appeared to me that perhaps some of the forest of the things said in the other thread was being obscured by an occasional tree or two. 
I understand what you mean, Matt, and you certainly have a right to express your thoughts on this, without worrying about putting at risk our friendship. I hope we’re both OK with each other still - at least I am with you, mon ami.

You’re missing that poster’s point. The first amendment isn’t implicated because there’s no statute and no nexus with the federal government at all. If the airlinedecided to curtail it’s employee’s political speech it isn’t a federal action that violates the first amendment. It’s just a policy of the airline, and unless you can somehow make a connection between the feds and the airline in this regard, there’s no first amendment issue.
