Back in September I applied for a writing job at Valve, which suited me to a T. Unfortunately I seemed to have been too late, as about a week after I sent my application, the posting was taken down and presumably the job filled. At the time – though before I noticed that the job was no longer open – I posted this thread asking for advice.
Anyway, while I was anxiously waiting a response, I spent my time oh-so-productively by creating a couple of song parodies to “Want You Gone” (“Want A Job”) and “Still Alive” (“Still On File”). I wasn’t sure whether I was gonna do anything with them; they were just a way to take my mind off my anxiety.
Once the job was no longer available and my hopes were dashed, I decided… well, what the hell, what have I got to lose? So I recorded the songs, made videos to show off the lyrics, and on a rare bold whim forwarded the links to Valve’s Gabe Newell. While he didn’t respond (not surprisingly, he must get kabillions of emails a day!) I was pleasantly surprised to see that someone(s) from Valve not only looked at the video, but visited my portfolio as well. (I know this 'cause ValveSoftware’s IP showed up in my site stats.)
Of course this won’t go anywhere, I’m not that deluded. But it’s still neat that someone from Valve definitely saw something I created. ![]()
Anyway I just wanted to share because I’m kinda proud of them, particularly “Still On File,” mainly because using Melodyne to synthesize GLaDOS and add harmonies took a helluva lot of work and tweaking to get right.
So if you’re interested in mediocre song parodies, check 'em out: Want A Job and Still On File
Frankly I still think I was perfect for that freakin’ job. They don’t know what they’re missing!
