My proposoal for improved society.

Then have the top .01% teach the top 5%.

And then, for the sake of social stability, shoot them?

It could be that he just doesn’t like children and thinks that shutting himself away with a bunch of like-minded people would be lovely.

We need to know, SBSO, are you going to be inside the wall or outside it?

No one ever devised a utopia which fundamentally excludes themselves ('cept Hitler), do you really need him to answer this…or just hoping he does.

I remember reading one of those Earth-will-be-destroyed-let’s-populate-the-space-ark SF stories where:

-Anyone could join the committee appointed to decide who would be one of the luck few to be saved
-Joining the committee meant instant disqualification from the list of candidates for saving.

A possible alternative:

The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee

They have been a successful commune for almost forty years now.

Warning to Small British Shop Owner: Some photographs may contain Black people.

Never mind the black people, there are children in those pictures! How dare you!

There are plenty of socialist countries, they don’t automatically fail. If you mean Communism, Communism fails mainly because centrally planning a large economy is essentially beyond human capability. Or to be more precise, planning it well.

As for anarchy, it works fine ( plenty of families are anarchies, for example ); what it doesn’t do is scale up. Our brains, like those of other social primates, can only handle so much social complexity; in the case of humans, that means IIRC 200 + people. Exceed that number, and the anarchy collapses, one way or another. An anarchic commune of, say, 100 people can function until people lose interest and drift off, because everyone can keep track of who’s trustworthy, who’s not, who’s smart, who’s good at this or that; when it exceeds a numerical threshold it falls apart. The few remaining anarchic tribal groups don’t go above that critical number, although the collapse tends to be a violent one ( which is how they drop below the critical threshold; death ).

Non-anarchies can grow much larger because the artificial structure of a government isn’t limited to what a single brain can handle. The king/president/parliment doesn’t need to personally know well every last knight and lord and mayor and safety inspector and sheriff and tax collector, and they don’t need to know each other.

I wonder if the “no children” thing is related to the “ultra low tax” part of the proposal. A large part of taxes go towards funding education, so if you have no children you don’t need to pay for that education. The problem with this is that presumably the inhabitants of this utopia benefit from an education taken and paid for somewhere else – so other people’s taxes indirectly support the system.

I wish this owner of a shop in Small Britain would come back and respond to these questions.

Seriously – explain the logic underlying this conclusion, please.

Hey, I see how your innovative idea could indeed help society! We establish your utopian zone, let you be in charge, and as soon as you’ve got all the people who are “your sort” in there, nice and snug . . . we build a 40-foot brick wall around the whole place and never mention it again. The wall will have “KEEP OUT” signs on one side. . . and “STAY PUT” signs on the other.

Am I the only one who learned the lesson of Golgafrincham?

Enjoy,

So, who are the idle?

Does this mean no one spending a hot Sunday afternoon on the beach sipping a drink and counting seagulls? No more breaks at work? Sleeping people are idle, so thats out. Does this cover American Idle too?

The beauty of this is, it doesn’t matter on which side you put the signs. “KEEP OUT” would work on the inside, as in “Keep out of the rest of the world,” and “STAY PUT” would work for the outside of the wall.

That’s just as wrong as fucking non-racist children.

I like how amidst his description of Draconian exclusions, he thinks that somehow he can keep the rabble out with ‘limited government’.

Worse, they have a very prominent birthing center there, and their midwives have some of the lowest infant mortality rates in the U.S. Everyone run for the hills, or you’ll be up to your armpits in babies!

Children=racism - this seems like a complete non-sequitur.

I too am keen to know who the “chattering classes” are. And if the idle are out, I think the members of this board are in trouble (or lucky, as the case may be).

I’m confused. I thought small British shop owners were part of the “chattering classes”?

Emperor Penguins - the enemies of civilisation.

Beautiful.

Heh–my sister was born there. Nifty place, although as I understand it the place achieved longevity by excluding the lollygaggers at some point in its history.
