…it wasn’t due untill the end of December, a could’a’been Christmas baby, but today my sister was forced to undergo surgery and allow it to be born today. It is only 13oz and we all fear that there is no chance for it to live. All the doctors have said there is no chance, but we all hold on to hope. The child, named Abagail (I don’t know the right spelling yet, but you get the idea), is no bigger than a miniature doll, and can fit in one hand.
This is our first time ever facing such a miricle, while at the same time, a travesty. I ask for either your prayers, if you are religious, or simply your best wishes. We all need it right now, and Abagail, more so than any of us.
My Grandfather was born over 2 months premature in 1917.
In rural Rockbridge County, Virginia, the son of a sharecropper. They had no hospitals, no incubators, nothing, and 14 other children.
They put him in a shoebox behind the woodstove, the closest thing they had to an incubator.
He died in 1996, having survived the Great Depression, WWII, a lifetime as an electrician, >10 heart attacks and a quadruple bypass.
About the only ill effect he suffered was he was somewhat smaller than all the other men in the family. He wore size 6 shoes (I wear 13’s). But he also played professional baseball and was the champion boxer in his army regiment.
Preemies can and do make it past incredible odds. If it’s meant to be, it will be. Do not allow yourself to doubt it.
Echoing the sentiments above-- things could still turn out ok, Brent, and I will also be praying for your neice and family. The important thing is that you love her and stay strong for each other.
And take heart from our darling Emma Kate, who is thriving after being born four months early last year. She is beautiful, and I am the proud recipient of a recent pic which allows me to say… she is the most ADORABLE munchkin!
I am linking to the original thread, then the latest update.
I’m sending all the good wishes I have to Abigail. I don’t pray, but I have friends who do, and I’ll ask them to pray for Abigail as I asked them to pray for Emma Kate.
You’ve got the Doper community pulling for her, and I know that’ll help.
